"Alternative" Media: From Refuge from MSM TO Engine of Change
Gee I really dug this comment by another poster named Joanne98

Part of the answer is that we live in a country whose ruling class is deeply insane. Hardly a day goes by when you don't see sociopathy packaged as Serious Opinion <3>. Today's installment, in fact, makes my point about Wall Street. Check out the statement <4> of bailed-out Chase CEO John Dimon. Deriding homeowners who are getting foreclosed on, he said:

"We should teach the American people, you're supposed to meet your obligations, not run from them."

Right, so we should blame problems on autoworkers for negotiating decent benefits and homeowners getting foreclosed on, while bailed-out CEOs who didn't meet their own expectations lecture us that "we should teach the American people you're supposed to meet your obligations." And you can bet media cartoon characters will be right there to promote this kind of paradigm as Serious Opinion.
------

Just wish It was posted WHERE THE ENTIRE POLITITICAL SPECTRUM COULD SEE IT. BIG NEWSPAPER WEB SITES ARE THE BATTLEGROUND. If people post there, other new readers can be led to excellent sites like this one. Its not "alternative" media unless you build brideges from the MSM to the alternative.

Then and only then will alternative media matter. Can everyopne please join STL Today. Its a good one because 1) lots of traffic 2) people from all over the country click and paste from there
3) of course there are idiots but there are also lots of non-idiots 4) great way of getting new peoplt to this excellent site. 5) what if this site got more readers than the NYT???? -- THAT IS WHEN WE WILL MAKE THE NEWS NOT READ THE NEWS OF THE CORPORATE FASCISTS.

Now I know a lot of people probably already post around, and they think Im writing this to feel morally superior. Well yes, but... I really think we need to talk more about media strategies and how to change the alternative media from from refuge to catalyst.

1. I highly recommend viewing "The Trap"
The Adam Curtis BBC documentary, "The Trap,"
really gets at the insanity behind the
governing and economic policies of the last
thirty-five years. It's a brilliant analysis
of the paranoia behind game theory and numbers
in the quest to control people and the world
out of a position of self-interest and the
freedom of the individual.

The only problem is that it doesn't work; it
can't work because it presumes that humans
are this way by nature and they aren't. Most
sane humans have a sense of altruism and the
public good achieved by trust and cooperation.

To destroy those people is to destroy society
and ultimately the world, and of course it
means that you are destroying the spirit of
love and caring for each other that drives
any healthy human interaction.

Until the memes of paranoid self-interest and
rugged individualism are replaced with altruism
and working for the public good, nothing of
substance will change... and any bandaids will
be ineffective at stemming the flow of blood
and the tide of chaos unleashed by the
paranoid ideological actions of the smarmy,
sanctimonious crowd of insane rulers, leaders,
and officials.

2. yes,
Edited on Sun Feb-22-09 10:07 AM by EPIC1934
Yes but Corporate Media has the power to project minority memes as the majority memes, thereby creating the ilusion that these minority memes are the norm when they are.... minority memes.

The point is that Corporate Meida still has the power to create the critical mass that is necessary before worker A and intern Z can have a common basis of knowledge TO ENABLE A CONVERSTAION AROUND THE WATER COOLER, PROVERBIAL OR LITTERAL. There is no way drone attacks in Pakistan will ever be Water coolable. It should be and it could be. But it depends on us clicking and pasting leading

FROM: MSM CURRENT AFAIRS SITES.

TO: SITES WITH A LOT MORE TRUTH.

My appologies for misuse of meme probably. Im a middle aged organism.

3. O.K. What is STL and can we have a link?
I agree with the premise that we need to wrest the MSM from the bloody hands of our corporate masters and I will support any action that helps achieve that end.

If You post I will bum your threads. THis site can get A LOT OF VIEWS over time. The best thing THE POSTS ARE IN A PLACE WHERE IT COULD GET NEW VIEWERS FOR SITES LIKE THIS ONE WITH REAL INFO AND MORE INFORMED OPINIONS. My moto, is "Out Niche is Our Despair" Of course its open to modification before the swaetshirts are printed.

I have found that in just eleven minutes I can post something on 25 big newspaper sites that I am registered on!

Think how many new peopl that could lead to sites like this one. Now some might worry about seeming like an interloper or whatever the rude net term for such a thing is. I have found that this is not the case provided one responds to the responses in a local way.

Of course I cant to 25 all the time. Sometimes just one or 2 but I like the feeling-illuison? of thinking that I may be REACHING PEOPLE WHO OTHERWISE ARE LESS LIKELY TO SEE IT especially in places where there is less media multiplicity!
