Welcome to the new Abu Ghraib
February 23, 2009

... The lock-up where US military guards tortured and humiliated Iraqi prisoners west of Baghdad has been reopened with fresh paint and a new name in a bid to shed its notorious reputation ...

The 113ha prison, which was already notorious as a torture centre under Saddam Hussein, closed in 2006 after the US handed it over to the Iraqis ...

The Iraqi Government said last year it would turn a section of the prison into a museum documenting Saddam's crimes but not the abuses committed by US guards.

The Justice Ministry is holding about 17,000 prisoners, while the US military recently said it had 14,500 Iraqis still in its custody after it began this month handing over an average of 50 detainees a day in accordance with the security agreement.
