We've lost the peace, and put the world at risk

WE'VE LOST THE PEACE AND PUT WORLD AT RISK

DEATH TOLL ONE YEAR ON: USA: 600, UK: 58, IRAQ: UP TO 17,000

snip.......

The Americans are seen as hated invaders. Other coalition forces, including the British, are labelled the same. The toll has been enormous. More than 600 Americans have died and there have been 58 British deaths. The number of Iraqis killed could be as high as 17,000.There are no figures for the numbers wounded, though it includes 3,466 Americans. Suicides among troops returning from the war are shockingly high.

...snip....

A year ago, those like the Mirror who objected to invading Iraq warned that it could become another Vietnam. In many ways, it is already. American involvement in Vietnam was driven by the corrupt White House regime of Richard Nixon. Now one of that disgraced president's key aides, John Dean, proclaims that the administration of George W Bush is even more corrupt. Criticisms of the current president and his henchmen have gone way beyond party politics. All the worst fears about letting this gung-ho bunch run the world's only superpower have come true with a vengeance.

At last the American people are beginning to realise the truth about Bush. The Pentagon refuses to allow pictures of the coffins coming home to be shown. But American news bulletins are presenting a daily tale of horror and slaughter. Just as they did during the Vietnam War. And the agony of distraught families and the wounded is starting to seep through America. Just as it did during Vietnam. In Iraq, the problem is not just a few rebels, a small number of thugs and terrorists, as US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld so smugly claims.

The worst nightmare is coming true. After the fall of Saddam it seemed as if there might be civil war as the old hatreds between the Sunni and Shi'ite communities were unleashed. Instead the impossible has happened. They have united against a common enemy - the American invaders. There are tens of thousands of Iraqis now determined to fight for their country. They include many of the soldiers from Saddam's armies, disbanded by Mr Rumsfeld against the wishes of British commanders. There are also al-Qaeda-supporting fighters who have come to Iraq for the first time.

snip......

The British people are worried and understandably so. But President Bush doesn't appear to be. He keeps on spouting warmongering nonsense while his soldiers keep on dying. Next week Tony Blair will meet him in the White House. That will provide a crucial opportunity to influence what is happening. Just as the Prime Minister was able to temporarily delay the start of the war.

...snip

It was Bush's obsession, and the make-believe of weapons of mass destruction had to be invented to justify it.He will not pay the same price as many of his troops, but he could lose this year's presidential election. That must not be the main consideration when Mr Blair meets him, though. There are far more vital consequences. What is happening in Iraq threatens the stability of the world, already on a knife-edge with the constant fear of terrorist attack. The invasion of Iraq was a mistake and the cavalier, mindless way the Americans have behaved since has been an even greater folly. But there is no point in saying: "We told you so."

snip........

1. Mirror is actually leftish, I think
In some ways a tabloid, but in other ways some solid reporting, or so I have heard. They never went for the war - they may publish Fisk, or another notable anti-war journalist whose name escapes me at the moment.

3. In the lead-up to the war, The Sun was pro-war, The Mirror was anti-war
At any rate, this is a pretty heartwrenching round-up.

7. Good morning SoCalDem
The Mirror is a NewsCorp paper. Unfortunately, this is an editorial (not LBN), so I'll have to move it to the Editorials forum.

Thanks! :hi:

12. NewsCorp ??!! No way, that's the Sun you're thinking of
Trinity Mirror is the UK's biggest newspaper publisher. The Group employs around 11,500 staff and produces some 250 titles

Nearly half the population reads one of our titles, which include one of the world's most famous newspaper brands, the Daily Mirror, plus three of the top 10 regional evening newspapers and three of the top 10 regional Sunday newspapers

The Mirror is no part of Murdoch's evil empire - it publishes the Daily Mirror, a down-market left-of-centre tabloid, generally full of horse racing tips, gossip columns, and buxom babes. It is the paper of choice of the old British working classes (not that there are many of these left nowadays), but is avowedly anti-war.

8. The implications for the middle east are truly frightening
Israel wishes US victory in Iraq, Palestinians side with insurgents
Fri Apr 9, 1:28 PM ET

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040409/wl_mideast_afp/mideast&cid=1514&ncid=1480

JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel expressed its full support for embattled US troops in Iraq (news - web sites), saying it hoped they would crush "terrorism", as several thousand Palestinians marched in support of anti-coalition insurgents.

"We are crossing our fingers for the Americans in Iraq. Their success is vital for world peace," Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told the mass circulation daily Yediot Aharonot.

"If the Americans manage to control the situation in Iraq, which Israel is convinced they will, it will have a positive impact on the whole Middle East, (on) the oil market and the international community's authority."

But he warned that "if the Americans are forced to withdraw from Iraq as a result of terrorist pressures, a new and dangerous Arab regime will seize power. The axis of evil will lift its head again and threaten world peace."

By contrast, more than 2,000 Palestinians, including masked gunmen, participated in a rally in Gaza City against the US-led occupation, called by the radical Islamic Jihad.

9. "Won the war, lost the peace"?
:wtf:

Is this like the soviets won the war but lost the peace in Afghanistan? :eyes:

10. the cavalier, mindless way the Americans have behaved
this is one of the things that has troubled me more than anything. So many people just take the 'whatever' attitude towards this invasion. That's a huge mistake. The rest of the world doesn't see it as a 'whatever' action. The see it for what it is: a violent act of empire. And really, the world wants none of it.

And yet these people say, 'well, Saddam was bad.' Well look at it now. This is better?

That cavalier attitude will be the downfall of our once great nation, IMO.

11. Weve lost everything
Respect, credibility, our allies and how long could this list go? We are going to have a hell of a time trying to mend fences and get outrselves out of this mess. I know Kerry can get us out of this, but there is going to a lot of lost face here and lots of crow to eat. I hope the American people have finally realized that there IS a difference between the two parties. Looks like my love of campaigning will be put to the test this year, but in the end it will be worth it. Go John!
