If Empathy Weren't Contagious, Would Republicans be Extinct?
Edited on Sat May-09-09 05:55 AM by Stingo
Micheal Steele has given unsoliticited advice to Barack Obama on the issue of the upcoming SCOTUS nomination. Steele, who had such difficulty passing the bar exam, decided to lecture about how scared he was of “empathy.” If he’s so scared, he needs to get a dog. Micheal Steele is today’s Republican Pundit Gone Wild!

4. Redding Vs Safford - Why Empathy Is Needed
When you have a Supreme Court Justice saying that a 13 year old girl was not humiliated when school officials strip searched her for drugs because kids get undressed for gym class that tells you this justice is either an idiot or so devoid of empathy as to not understand the difference. When another justice says if the school looked in her purse, bag, etc and didn't find anything so "by God, the drugs must be in her underpants" you realize we need people with a little bit of empathy on the Supreme Court. Of course, we could have the wrong type of empathy, such as understanding the school's vice principle willingness to humiliate one student rather than risk others being sick or worse.

Oh, and lest you think this is a Liberal vs. Conservative issue, the first justice was Breyer, the second Scalia and the third Souter. Alito and Stevens have actually said sensible things, although not necessarily empathetic with the girl. From what I've read, out of the nine, only Ginsburg seems disturbed by the idea of school officials pawing over a 13 year old girl's body.

Supposedly, there was much laughter when Breyer mentioned the gym class and people sticking things in underwear, and Scalia reportedly laughed when making his statement. So, it seems not only are most of our justices lacking in empathy, they also are deficient in maturity. I mean, once we get past puberty, aren't we supposed to stop finding underwear amusing?
