What would you do if you found out that your government was ignoring information from a multitude of scientific debates? Imagine what we would say about Iraq or even France if they received international attention because world-renowned scientists had criticized their leaders.
Surprisingly, the nation with an unexpectedly poor track record is ours, where many scientific leaders say the government has politicized scientific inquiry to an unprecedented degree.
Before our eyes, the facts are being misrepresented to support an agenda that disregards what it cannot use. When scientists — individuals who must be as objective as possible to gain prominence in their community — start to protest, it is time for us to listen.
The problem is widespread. The Bush administration continues to stall on creating strong climate-change policies, even though the Pentagon commissioned a report, "Imagining the Unthinkable," in February, which describes climate change as a catastrophic threat to national security, according to the Guardian Observer.
