2. Powell's lost his political kvorka.

Now that he's older and overstuffed into an expensive suit like Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld, Powell has lost his political kvorka -- and his past is finally catching up with him, too. When you look back to the times surrounding Gulf War I, it's amazing how much people projected themselves onto this man. Much of it was simply the way he looked: there was an equanimity about him, especially his facial symmetry.

Powell didn't squander his political cache or his (unearned) reputation. He simply spent it, playing at the politics of war and the war of politics for too long.
