Sotomayor hearings: Franken talks 'Mason' and judicial activism

Sotomayor hearing: The case that Perry Mason lost
It turns out that Al Franken and Sonia Sotomayor were both big fans of TV’s “Perry Mason” when growing up. And like the judge, the newly minted Democratic senator from Minnesota said he too remembered that, in one episode, the TV lawyer’s client was actually guilty.
Lightening the mood, Franken asked which episode that was.
Sotomayor confessed she had no idea.
“Didn’t the White House prepare you?” Franken asked.

3. I recall the episode, though I do not know the name of it...
the defendant had a 'split personality' the 'personality' Mason defended was innocent..the 'personality' who committed the crime was not his client! One was highly allergic to fur..the other was a fur lover! I recall us as kids asking how can you give the death penalty to someone who is innocent AND guilty and protect the innocent!

9. Franken is actually quite a thinker.
I've read his books. He can also think on his feet and answer honestly because he doesn't have an "agenda" other than getting to the truth.

I think it takes a strong intellect to be as quick witted as he obviously is. I'm glad he's there.

10. Comedians don't get enough respect. Most of them are brilliant.

Franken is. He's going to shake things up and make them laugh at the same time. Genius.

14. It takes a Rethug to get crabby about one minute of
stress-relieving humor. Must be sad to have your house of cards collapsing around you.

15. Franken showed his kindness, but, since virtually all the other
senators on that committee are lawyers, he may be the only one who would think it normal to say that he asked a question BECAUSE HE DID NOT KNOW THE ANSWER. Many lawyers pride themselves on always knowing the answer to a question before they ask it. The Judicial Committee is a tough fit for Franken, but I'm sure he will do his job well.
