WYDEN joins Lieberman, Nelson, Snowe, Collins to STOP healthcare reform
Edited on Fri Jul-17-09 01:22 PM by rivertext
I thought we didn't have any more Republican Senators in Oregon? Is Wyden a DINO? -- Democrat In Name Only

Oregonians, are we going to reelect Senator Wyden in 2010 now that he has joined Lieberman and Nelson in opposing health care reform?

I will post a message in the ** Activist HQ ** forum asking DUers to urge Congressman Peter DeFazio to challenge Wyden in the primary. If DeFazio were to challenge Wyden that would probably instantly get Obama another vote for health care; it would certainly get Oregon a second Democratic senator.

Citing CBO-Director's Statements, Senate Centrists Urge Slower Pace For Health Care Reform
By Brian Beutler - July 17, 2009, 12:44PM

Six key Senate Centrists--Ben Nelson (D-NE), Joe Lieberman (I-CT), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Ron Wyden (D-OR)--are asking Democratic and Republican leaders to slow down the pace of health care reform efforts.

---snip----

According to Huffington Post's Ryan Grim, who first obtained the letter, "The organized effort to slow down the process is a blow to the reform effort." And, indeed, there letter exemplifies a growing sense among centrists and health reform skeptics that the pace of reform should be slowed down. But it's also a restatement of very publicly held views. Earlier today, Nelson himself appeared on CNN and suggested congressional health care leaders should not to move too quickly.

2. I've always read that Wyden was one of our most liberal Democrats.
If that's true, what happened to him? Is this his first lapse? When did he start to behave like the Blue Dogs.

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) on the stakes in delaying a health care vote past August: "If we're able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him." --Josh Marshall's summary of Politico article.

4. Well, all I can say is that it was really a lot of fun ousting Gordon Smith
And getting rid of Wyden will be every bit as much fun! The phone banking, the door knocking, all that coffee! I met fun people and got a tee-shirt! Let's do it again!

6. I'm sorry!
I remember reading about (and contributing to) that race--isn't that the one where Smith refused to use the word "Republican" and instead put "GOP Candidate" on the literature? It's one small comfort living in Michigan--we have Levin and Stabenow. They very rarely screw us. Should I write to complain?

9. If he used to be "Liberal" and he has a Dem President...then what the Hell happened to him?
After all...we don't have McCain as an overwhelmingly elected President for Change! What happened to Wyden? Was he Liberal when we were out of power and now he's with the Repugs?

:wtf:

8. Isn't Wyden getting bhig donations from insurance and pharmaceuticlas?
If so, he can be dismissed by the people. There are more of them. The peolple just have to resist the multi-million dollar ads, which of course is the problem.

10. Krugman calls Wyden & Co. "Deadly hypocrites"
The six deadly hypocrites

Will the destructive center kill health care reform? It looks all too possible.

What’s especially galling is the hypocrisy of their claimed reason for delaying progress — concern about the fiscal burden. After all, in the past most of them have shown no concern at all for the nation’s long-term fiscal outlook.

-- snip --

If the Gang of Six really does kill reform, remember their names; they will bear the responsibility for vast, unnecessary suffering over the years to come.

11. From Wikipedia.org
Looks to be up for re-election in 2010.

"Wyden was elected to a full term in 1998, and in 2004, was re-elected to another full term, receiving 64% of the vote compared to 31% for his main opponent, Republican Al King.

In the Senate, Wyden serves on the following Committees: Finance; Intelligence; Energy and Natural Resources; Budget and the Special Committee on Aging.

He chairs the Energy Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests.

As of August 2007, Wyden has an approval rating of 58%, with 33% disapproving.<3>"
