Pfc. Amber Vikander kept her cool under nightly mortar attacks and white-knuckle convoy rides during her year in Iraq. But last week, she blew her top when she called home to Granite Falls, Minn., to say her July wedding is postponed.
The hotel, caterer and DJ were reserved. The bridesmaids' gowns were chosen.
But the Pentagon had other plans for the bride.
Vikander, 21, is among the 20,000 troops whose duty in Iraq was extended this month for up to 120 days. And now, her family is haggling with United Airlines over $1,200 worth of tickets to Washington state for the wedding while it also goes back into worry mode over Amber's safety, said her father, David Vikander.
Like the Vikanders, hundreds of Upper Midwestern families are adjusting their plans this week because their loved ones are having to stay in Iraq.
