I got a job
Longwinded post but FINALLY I got a job

I’ve been out of work for 10 months and let me tell you it is brutal out there.

Last September my former employer dropped me officially 5 days before my year-long “probationary period” was up. No problem I thought (not that I was happy about it), I will hit the ground running and get another job. At first I was doing telephone interviews almost every day. Initial interviews regularly and several “final interviews” basically me versus one, two, or more people. I was encouraged even though I wasn’t getting the job offers.

I told my wife that I would just go out and get a “McJob” of some sort. She said “Why?”….. you have to clear $12 an hour just to ‘get off the couch’. Take your time and make sure you are available for interviews” Okay with me. I did get to spend a lot of time with our daughter (she turned 4 years old on Wednesday), work my tail off to get Obama elected (sometimes going door to door in a suit between job interviews), and trained for & ran a marathon (my third).

Then….. the bottom dropped out.

From Halloween until March there was nothing out there. I used 6 or 8 sources for job searches and used 8 parameters in each to search. Monster, Yahoo, VEC-Va. Employment Commission, two local papers and their on-line (which is different from their hardcopy  ), craigslist, a local non-profit website, and THREE “headhunters”. Since I have an accounting degree (not a CPA) I looked under- accounting, finance, audit, government (my recent background), not-for-profit, etc.----- Nothing. It was actually hard to find the required two jobs to draw on my unemployment insurance.

I kept a spreadsheet. The final total was 180 jobs I applied for and that was after honing down the search from 8-10 to 3 -4 that I was really qualified for WHEN there were jobs out there.

The funniest story was a call I got from one of my headhunters about a job.
“It is 8 to 5…you will go in a separate entrance…”
“Huh?”
It was for a bookkeeping/accounting job at a “Gentleman’s club” one of a string on the east coast. My wife said “Uh, no. I don’t want Josie’s dad to be working in a strip joint and it won’t look very good on your resume”.
Hell it paid GREAT.
I saw the exact same job two months later on craigslist. I called the headhunter and he confirmed that it was the same job. Now, however, the pay had dropped 40%. It is a hirer's market out there.

At one of my “final interviews” I got out of the H.R. guy that they were getting 6 or 7 times the resumes they usually get. He was swamped on any and all positions. He finally let on that he got over 40 resumes for this one job.

Some of the job descriptions read like my resume. A complete and somewhat unique match, I got a call back on maybe 10% of them-there were/are that many people out there looking for jobs.

I did go to several places walking into the H.R. department but most of them either said "We have nothing available" or "we only do applications on-line". My headhunters all told me that they were having a hard time placing people anywhere THEY may have to lay people off. A few months ago I was cutting the grass and missed a call--by the time I returned it 75 minutes later the temp job at Bank of America was gone. "No one is willing to pull the trigger" several headhunters told me.

Three weeks ago one place called me the day of my first interview to tell me that they have filled the position. :wtf: THEY called me that week to set it up. I spent $10 faxing them their application (because the resume just wasn't enough).

Oh and the online application process :nuke: takes FOR EVER on some websites.

So on March 1 we are getting in the car to go to the marathon at Va. Beach. I check the mailbox. A letter from the VEC "your unemployment benefits have run out". Great now I have to worry about that in the midst of running a marathon with a rehabbed broken leg. On that Monday I got another letter- benefits extended as a result of the "Recovery Act" ("Stimulus Bill").... and yes we spent all the money on food, housing, etc. okay and an overnight trip to run a marathon and take our daughter to the beach.... in March.
Whew!
Later on I actually got a raise. $25 a week.Seriously.
What is this.... FRANCE???

For the last month or more I have hit the "big box stores" websites looking for ANY work-Walmart, Costco, Sears, BJ's, Staples, several bank teller jobs, etc... no calls. Everyone tells me that they know that if I did get a good offer I would be out of there before my nametag hit the ground. Their are right I would have.
Staples first question is multiple choice: "In the last 5 years how much merchandise would you say you have stolen from your employer?" they have 5 ranges- I answered "$0".
Walmart asks basically the same question 5 or 6 times in the midst of their 64 question application survey.

This week is the last week for any money coming in from me. I have held off selling stuff on eBay as a reserve. I cashed in the 401K just as the market's bottom dropped out (lost $500 in one day).

So THEN our computer crashes with a virus. A bad one. So I have to do everything out of the local library. There is a 2 hour limit per day. I basically did a day of searching and the next day emailing resumes.

Yesterday I am in the library (like I am now) and the phone rings. I GOT THE JOB they funny part is that I didn't remember applying for it initially. They had a 10 question email for me to answer and said that they would get back with me in "10 business days" that was 5 weeks before my first interview. It is odd how people call you and you are doing something, they tell you who they are calling from and you have to quickly scan your memory for what position this was and what it entails.... anyway I got the call, ran outside (no cell phones in the library thank you), and they offered me the job. I start next Monday.

My feet barely hit the ground the rest of the day. It is a good job doing good things. In the healthcare industry but in a very precise and greatly needed area.

I GOT A JOB!!!

Sorry, I am kind of busy right now so I could not write a long message

I was also in debt hole a couple months back, but I found a small solution at

They helped me get started in the google business and make thousands
of dollars in a couple of days. I paid off my bills in less than a
day, and allowed me to feel free again. The best part is I work for
myself, at home!

Just in case you missed the link here it is again,

Trust me, in an economy like this I would bookmark them ;).

I don't know maybe I'm just not trusting enough?

Edited on Fri Jul-31-09 12:17 PM by rocktivity
Got an e-mail about a terrific-sounding job, sent in my resume, get a call, and find out that the e-mail didn't mention that it's a two-month temp job.

I got so desperate I put a "situations wanted" ad on Craigslist. The result was spam and scams until today--checked out the e-mailer's web site and it's an actual company. Phone interview went great; job description is right down my alley. In-person should be one day next week. Don't bogart the job-getting vibes, my friend, pass them over here!

29. Congratulations and good work!
It is an extremely challenging environment, and any job at all is good.

My story is very much like yours subtracting out many of the "good parts". I am a technician by trade and by gift. Mechanical, electrical, optical, computers and the like.

I have placed over 170 "applications" over the last 5 months. It seems as though most places either want your resume or an online application, which you noted sucks. My resume is very good, after being honed for months. I had a professional critique it and have researched resume writing extensively. My experience is solid and wide ranging, though it seems not appropriate for most of the jobs I'm seeing.

Here's where the "good parts" of your experience get subtracted out. I live in Chicago, which you would figure to be a great area to search, but believe it or not there just aren't enough jobs in my area to apply for to meet the minimum required by unemployment, so I have been searching almost the entire country. I figure I have placed 170+ resumes and online apps starting in early March.

Unlike you I have gotten less than 10 responses of any kind!

I admit that it has only been 5 months, but I haven't even been getting even phone interviews. The few contacts I have gotten were mostly headhunters who were looking for experience I don't have and don't claim to. They just don't understand the technical fields and have a hard time figuring out what technical resumes mean. Once they find out you don't have experience in a particular area they are interested in, they hang up quickly. They aren't even interested in discovering what talents and experience you have, because there are so few jobs and they are totally driven by the needs of that one job they are hunting.

I've had one in person bait and switch interview, where the interviewer was looking for experience he knew I didn't have, as this had been gone over in the phone interview. During the interview he slipped in the "well we do have an alternate job" (which doesn't offer near the pay rate). The figure I initially offered as what would be my minimum over the phone was 40% lower than the salary of my last job. In other words he was trying to get my full technical expertise while paying about half of what my last job paid. The funny and pathetic part to me was he pretended he couldn't find the figure we discussed over the phone, hoping I would voluntarily offer a lower one, which I didn't...

So, to say the least I have never experienced anything like this before. It is definitely the worst environment for job hunting in my over 25 years post college experience. Manufacturing and research have taken a real beating here.

I am not looking for any kind of sympathy, I am just adding a sober note to an already sober tale. Life goes on and there will be something for me sooner or later, as there was for you. I just don't know where it will be, or when it will happen, or even what I will be doing when it does. So far I am resisting forfeiting my experience to find a new job. Perhaps I will have to "start over" totally.

I will offer up a blessing for you on your new job. "May your new job be the last you will ever need, may it fulfill your needs, surpass your expectations and may your life be a long and happy one."

Congratulations,

currently unemployed

31. Congrats on getting the job ...
I work in HR and can attest that things are really tough. But I am seeing signs that things are loosening up based on the number of resignations we're receiving. Exit interviews confirm that these people are leaving to accept employment elsewhere.

32. I'm a little curious of your reply. You say you see movement, yet
Edited on Fri Jul-31-09 01:21 PM by Currently Unemployed
My experience is showing it is tougher than it was just a few months ago. A lot tougher as a matter of fact.

I had queries built up on Monster.com that were giving a few results regularly. Nice tight results that related well to the keywords I was using with maybe 5 jobs every day showing up. After about a month the jobs thinned out, with almost no related results. Then the results picked up a bit with the same over all numbers as before, but the jobs that are showing up are less related to the keywords as they were previously. It is as if they are saying "Well, there just aren't any jobs related to your search, but we have to give you a few, so here they are even if they don't relate...".

I have also noted that some of the the jobs posted are the same jobs as before, but now with tighter criterion.

I believe it is way tougher now. Could the movement you are seeing be only the top-most performers moving around amongst the few remaining jobs? In other words the cream of the crop moving around with those that have been shaken out of the market being stuck unemployed?

Upon edit I have also seen many more contract jobs. It is as if employers are seeing this bumper crop market of candidates as a shopping opportunity so they refuse to commit.]

57. I see a LOT of executives jumping to other companies
My megacorp just had a VP of product marketing (THE GUY for PM) jump to another company.

We are a multi-national, so I'm here in the holland office (only the LA office is bigger, and abut 10x) where we have actual contracts.
not the bullshit "contract"s I would get from temp agencies when I was working IT in silicon valley during the later half of the boom (long rant I won't bother you with about the uselessness of agencies, no matter WHAT country you are in) but honest to god contracts!

I JUST got my Third (and final, the next one is either PERM or poof) one YEAR contract (yay?)!!!
that's one year I do NOT have to worry about where money is coming from as long as I keep my temper under control (after 2+ years of this BS, i'm numb enough it's not much of an issue) and my head down, I might get that final contract...

however right now, that perm contract is the kiss of death.

we have lost at least 10 people in the NL office because they were up for their perm contract. the company is just NOT giving them out... unless you're an executive (even longer hateful rant about executives).

Nearly all of those people were considered perfect, PERFECT! in their jobs!

But the company will NOT commit right now.
Those positions still need to be filled, but there is also a hiring freeze.
So, the European office, which has always been understaffed, is even more under staffed, and loosing people every WEEK!

We lost two VERY good people this week alone. one left Monday, the other left Friday.
The first one has a job in her preferred field, because the executive would N O T move her to another department where she really wanted (and was capable) of going. so she's happy.

the second one just left. she's tired of the internal politics, the bullshit, etc. There was little work and it wasn't challenging for her.
I admit if I didn't have to take care of my family I might have left for the same reasons.

61. Contracts here are actually binding...
American "contract" work simply means up to 6 months, or until they get tired of you.
Here they MUST give me 6 months worth of work and/or pay.
but I agree contract work sucks, but it usually pays better than normal hourly and it's work.
one in the hand and all that.

45. Congrats. Now remember the rest of us occasionally.
We're out here too. We are putting out hundreds of resumes that are going into trash cans. 15 percent of the businesses I'm cold-calling are out of business. No one even wants to interview.

What you can do is to work to get things like single payer health care, a real economic recovery program involving public works, and basically disemboweling those bastardly bankers and taking their money back for the people. Remember your own pain and try to help the rest of us out of OUR pain.

52. Congrats UP!
Your story has given me hope.

I'm in exactly the same boat with even fewer marketable skills and have barely even been looking for the past 2 months because there just wasn't anything to apply for vaguely in my field and it was just too depressing applying to grocery stores (with an MA and 2 years management experience in a techie field) and not even getting a call back. 300+ applications, 19 job interviews, 1 year later and bupkis.

Hope you enjoy the job! Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke!

53. A big Congratulations!!!
I've been there! It's a very frustrating feeling isn't it? Now you can go back to living. I can't help but notice that our society has very poor transition allowances and facilities. I recall going to the Michigan Employment Center and feeling that my situation was absolutely helpless and hopeless.

Again CONGRATULATIONS!!!! And good luck with your running!

54. Congrats! "It is a good job doing good things. In the healthcare industry..."
Also glad that you'll be in a position to do good! To me, that's a non-monetary perk!

Way to go, and all best in your endeavors!
