One very ancient form of hunting is the witch-hunt. Today, though, we enjoy hunting lies. True, lies are not new. In politics, the art of telling untruths has always been widely practiced, and it is not even certain that the volume of political lies is growing. The apparent increase derives from the fact that we are ignoring the distinction between those who tell lies in the knowledge that they are lying, and those who are unaware they are lying, but say something that is not true (that turns out to be false in retrospect) because they are wrong. In short, we are ignoring the distinction between lies and mistakes. If we do so, everything becomes a lie, but this too is - please excuse the play on words - a lie.
