http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/04/04/30_shutup.htmlOnce again, some of the best material at DU is featured on the splash/home page. The most precious thing in our country--beside our integrity which is nonexistent at this point--is the blood of our young people in the armed services. That blood should never, NEVER be squandered or cheapened. The blood of our youth should only be shed in times of grave national emergency, which this is not. The current treatment of the fine men and women of the armed services is nothing short of criminal and treasonous.

3. Mark Twain wrote an honest "War prayer" that did not hide the truth |
|
"O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle – be Thou near them! With them – in spirit – we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe. O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells; help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead; help us to drown the thunder of the guns with shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain; help us to lay waste their humble homes with hurricanes of fire; help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief; help us to turn them out roofless with their little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it – for our sakes who adore Thee, Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet! We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love, and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts. Amen."

Sign of the times -- both then and now -- that someone of the stature of Mark Twain would succumb to the pleas of his family and agree for this truth to be told only after his death...

The Repub's attempt to censor Nightline tonight is a case in point, and just another effort to hide the truth from the American people. Drudge has a copy of John McCain's letter to David Smith, CEO of Sinclair who -- incidently -- has already given nearly $100,000 to Bush's 2004 campaign.
McCain said in part, "There is no valid reason for Sinclair to shirk its responsibility in what I assume is a very misguided attempt to prevent your viewers from completely apapreciating the extraordinary sacrifices made on their behalf by Americans serving in Iraq....Your decision to deny your viewers an opportunity to be reminded of war's terrible costs, in all their heartbreaking detail, is a gross disservice to the public, and to the men and wonen of the United States Armed Forces. It is, in short, sir, unpatriotic. I hope it meets with the public opprobrium it most certainly deserves."
Hoo-AHHH !
