A Byrd in the hand is worth way more than two Bushes
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0429-08.htm
Byrd speech
Mission accomplished? The mission in Iraq, as laid out by President Bush and Vice President Cheney, has failed. Even more disturbing, the disdain for international law, and the military bombast of this cocky, reckless Administration have tarnished the beacon of hope and freedom which the United States of America once offered to the world.

How long will America continue to pay the price in blood and treasure of this President's war? How long must the best of our nation's military men and women be taken from their homes to fight this unnecessary war in Iraq? How long must our National Guardsmen be taken from their communities to fight and die in the hot sands in Iraq? How long must the fathers and mothers see their sons and daughters die in a far away land because of President Bush's doctrine of preemptive attack? How long must little children across our land go to sleep at night crying for a daddy or mother far away who may never come home?

President Bush typified the Happy Warrior when he strutted across the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln a year ago this coming Saturday. He was in his glory that day. But on this May 1, we will remember the widows and the orphans that have been made by his fateful decision to attack Iraq; we will be aware of the tears that have been shed for his glory.

3. too political
nightline has it right to keep it just memorial and not a position.

I love Byrd, sometimes he has an extra long pause and I expect him to doze off or lose his place, then BAM the long pause was intentional emphasis. He uses mostly simple words and pulls out an unusual, but not too fancy, one for effect like bombast. His voice is just creaky enough to make you listen closely.

4. This man has evolved so much.
I am so proud of my man, Senator Byrd.

He has come a long way on the path of human dignity and courage.

He is proof that change is possible.

I embrace him.

5. I love Senator Robert Byrd

He is a national treasure no doubt. :loveya: I was sorry to hear he isn't running for reelection, I guess his age is catching up with him. Whenever I get really down, I go to his website and read his speeches.

Senator Byrd also loves getting email I understand. I have emailed him more than once.

I really hope he reconsiders whether he will run for reelection. Maybe he will change his mind.

6. Every time I have ever written him, he has always been responsive.
Hell, when I wrote him about my career endeavors as a job hunter (seemingly a perpetual job hunter), he had his assistant send me loads of resource materials.

This man has grown from a pre-civil rights, male-dominated, nationalist to a real human being who embraces human dignity. He is an amazing example of an evolved soul.

7. maybe you write better letters than I do
Admittedly I've never received a reply but I haven't asked for anything or told him anything really personal.

I've more or less just commended him about his speeches and his views. Maybe I'll get a letter from him yet! :)

8. Have you sent written letters or only emails?
Moreover, I must confess that I don't receive responses to the commendations I send to him. But, when I send letters encouraging certain positions or advising of certain information (about PNAC, for example), he has always, always written a response.

9. I've gotten several from his office
including responses from emails. Are you a constituent? If not, that may be why.

11. I missed his speech but MSNBC of all things did a clip of it! It was
wonderful to hear him and I was shocked that they actually showed a portion of it! :toast: to you Bobbie Byrd. We love you very much.

12. I greatly appreciate the Senator's standup opposition
to this maladministration but he is not unalloyed gold. His environmental record sucks out loud. The senator from Big Coal.
