Media War Featuring Fox News Versus CNN & MSNBC Has Begun

Media war featuring Fox News versus CNN & MSNBC has begun

Ryan Witt

The (war) of news media networks has begun and it is not a pretty sight. While CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC have always had a rivalry they never let the animosity spill out into the open as they have now.

Tensions have been building forever as on-air personalities like Bill O' Reilly and Keith Olbermann frequently engaged in back-and-forth spats. Recently former CNN turned Fox News personality Glenn Beck http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-5738-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m9d11-Video--Glenn-Beck-complains-about-lack-of-ACORN-story-but-neglects-to-mention-his-loss-of-sponsors">was critical of the lack of coverage given to his Van Jones and ACORN stories. What ultimately turned this cold war into a full-scale hot war though was an ad run by Fox News in the Washington Post.

In http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igZZzs3MR7Y">the ad Fox News accuses all the other news networks of essentially ignoring the 9/12 Tea Party protest in Washington D.C. The ad seems to have been the last straw for CNN as Rick Sanchez http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-5738-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m9d18-Video--CNNs-Rick-Sanchez-slams-Fox-News-over-912-Tea-Party-coverage">devoted a long segment of his show to proving CNN did in fact extensively cover the 9/12 protests. At the end of his segment Sanchez went on the criticize how Fox News "promoted" the event rather than "covering" the event.

Now CNN is picking up on the "cover but don't promote" theme. Campbell Brown made the same charge against Fox News in her airtime. Finally CNN is now running their own ad claiming that Fox News engages in "distorting not reporting." We now can all eagerly anticipate the next Fox News reaction.

OMG I really hope that CNN continues pulling the curtain like this and that it's only the beginning of the end of the Reich's brainwashing propaganda machine.

19. the more i learn, the more it seems like american politics
are almost entirely controlled by corporations. I mean, a company like GE would potentially also give money to a Democrat president/senators if they were sure that any nation building projects would benefit them.

NewsCorp particularly pisses me off. I'm starting to get the message out down in here in Australia as well, NewsCorp does NOT like progressive governments.

12. Game on...
I'd like to see CNN or MSNBC do something like "Just who is Rupert Murdoch?" and why does he want to control what you think or hear or whatever. Can you just imagine how Beck and his ilk would spin Murdoch's foreign origins if he owned one of the other cable new outlets? Unpatriotic! Unamerican! blah blah blah.

If you watch http://edition.cnn.com/">CNN International you can see some really good objective reporting & programs.

I have been having a look at Faux over the past few months to get to know how the enemy is operating and can honestly say that in that time I have not seen ONE story on that NeoCON voicebox that was about something happening outside of America.

To compete with that, is there a Faux news International equivalent to the excellent CNN International channel? No! Is Faux news spreading it's NeoCON/arguably racist but certainly xenophobic propaganda all around the world - including with approx. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184837,00.html">100 cable operators in the two largest Muslim populated countries in the world, Pakistan and Indonesia? Yes!

Saying CNN is the same as Faux is akin to saying Bill O'Lielly is the same as Keith Olbermann, which is clearly wrong.

21. This discussion isn't about CNNI. It's about domestic CNN
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 11:24 AM by Doctor_J
Those are two entirely different entities. Domestic CNN is nearly indistinguishable from Fox "News", in their right-wing GOP slant. One need only peruse Media Matters for a few minutes to see dozens of examples. Or, if MM is too "liberal" for you, try to sit through an hour of Lou Dobbs or Howard Kurtz. I guess it's nice that CNN actually provides real news to the rest of the world, but here in America it's just another GOP propaganda center.

You admit to being addicted to Fox. I am sorry to be really blunt, but that makes anything you say pretty suspect.

22. No, I did not admit to being "addicted to Fox"
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 12:19 PM by Turborama
What I actually said was that "I have been having a look at Faux over the past few months to get to know how the enemy is operating" and that doesn't make anything I say suspect at all. What it does say is that I'm informing myself and not burying my head in the sand and pretending it doesn't exist, as anyone who is a regular on the videos forum and/or looked at my journal/http://www.youtube.com/user/Naskeleng">YouTube Channel will attest.

I'm an expat living abroad and I have 5 different non-local TV news sources: BBC World, Al Jazeera English, CNN International, CNBC and Faux. Faux only started being broadcast here about 3 months ago and I have been looking at it through a totally different lens than your prejudice assumes. In fact, my MAIN sources of TV news are, and have been for a long time, CNN International, BBC World and Al Jazeera English.

Actually, your knee-jerking assumptions about me and ridiculous twisting of what I have written makes your objectivity very suspect.

24. So, getting back to the discussion, CNNI may not be like Fox,
but the CNN that is piped into US homes is extremely conservative/Republican in its ideology, having the same number of liberals hosting shows (0) as Fox, while giving regular air time to reactionaries like Dobbs, Zionists like Blitzer, and corporate Repukes like Kurtz. They used to sign King Glenn's checks, but could not match Fox's offer to the lunatic, a decision which they are now likely regretting since he's now required viewing for the mouth-breathing Palinites.

At any rate, MSNBC's daytime line-up is also very conservative, but in the evening they do provide evening shows for Rachel, Keith, and Ed (though Ed has more repukes than Dems on his show). So they are by far the best of the three "news" networks.

Congrats on escaping the US before Beck became Supreme Ruler. I cannot fathom why anyone would watch Fox if BBC and CNNI were available though.

25. There are a few notable exceptions, though IMO
Edited on Sun Sep-20-09 02:48 PM by Turborama
Christiane Amanpour is starting a http://edition.cnn.com/CNNI/Programs/amanpour/">new show tomorrow. It'll be broadcast daily on CNNI and, unfortunately for those in the US, only weekly on CNN.

From what I've seen recently on the videos forum Rick Sanchez has been doing some good work, and Anderson Cooper's http://edition.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2009/planet.in.peril/">Planet In Peril series has been excellent.

I was watching Faux occasionally out of morbid curiosity and then during the Van Jones thing I started watching it some more, it really wound me up because I'm a big fan of Van and wanted to keep on top of how it was playing out. I made http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/9/779019/-Big-Oil-Lobbyist-Was-Behind-the-Van-Jones-Witch-Hunt">a Dairy about it on Kos, if you're interested to see what I came up with. Then the whole ACORN thing came along and it was/is wall to wall ACORN and as soon as that started happening I stopped watching Faux and started researching the back story of the instigators and following the threads on GD instead. As you know, there's only so much Faux a sane person can take.

In fact, that experience of watching Faux has made me want go on a personal crusade to bring it down, as I mentioned in this thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6513234&mesg_id=6514526

They've been staging these pillow fights since the 1980s.
Please note that I no longer distinguish between Torture Party politicians and
the fascist media. They're all on the same team.
They don't want to have less than 30% credibility.
But their corporate masters don't want the news reported.
So its illusion, nothing more.
American Journalism, with the exceptions of Democracy Now and Bill Moyers, is dead.
And it won't be back in our lifetime
I recommend the BBC and the Guardian.
