Nearly 200 workers in Shelton have been affected by managed-health care provider Health Net Inc.'s decision to outsource its information technology call center.
The state Labor Department said Monday 183 information technology professionals working at Health Net's Shelton facility are eligible for federal assistance under the U.S. Trade Adjustment Assistance program.
The federal government provides training and sometimes direct subsidies to the workers who lose their jobs when their companies hire replacement workers in countries with which the U.S. government has negotiated trade agreements.
According to a filing posted on the U.S. Department of Labor's Web site, the jobs formerly in Shelton and other Health Net facilities in other states are being done in call centers in India, Ireland and Argentina.
The Shelton workers officially became eligible for Trade Act benefits Aug. 25 after the U.S. Labor Department certified a nationwide petition for them and other Health Net workers.
Any Health Net IT worker who loses his or her job, or encounters a reduction in hours as a result of this outsourcing, from May 18 of last year to Aug. 25, 2011, is eligible for the benefits.
Publicly traded Health Net is based in Woodland Hills, Calif.
