Intel Inside Could Mean a TV That Watches You

It will either be really cool or really creepy, but some day your TV will know a lot more about you.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Intel is putting Atom processors almost everywhere these days, with the latest target being televisions. The company announced a new Atom-based system-on-a-chip (SoC) design for television sets to make them the hub of social networking and interactivity.

For example, it knew what TV shows Rattner had been previously watching but paused in mid-viewing. When turned on another set he was offered the opportunity to continue watching the show, even though he was watching on a different TV.

Another, potentially disturbing element for privacy advocates, of the smart TV was it knew, thanks to a mobile Internet device (MID) Rattner had been carrying, that he recently visited a musical instrument store. The MID told the TV this, and among the different shows offered for suggested viewing were shows on guitarists. At the bottom of the screen were banner advertisements, one of them for a guitar store.

My family hasn't watched tv for years. We do have one tv, that's hooked up to a dvd player so the kids can watch movies (at the moment they're on a weekend Lord of the Rings-athon).

But television as far as watching programs and news and commercials? Its on a long slide, and good riddance.

26. in 2000 we shut off the cable service

as it was stupidly expensive and we hardly watched anything anyway. We had an aerial antennae still, an got PBS and a couple of local channels, but in 2001 we did some remodeling and the tv sat in a part of the room where the cable didn't reach. No one missed it, though we have always had it in the room with a dvd player attached. My two daughters were fond of disney movies for awhile, and anime now.

Generally we read, we write (my daughters and I are all working separately on writing projects), we talk, we listen to music. I make a couple of trips a week to the library, and there's always interesting books. You can also get movies and music and books on tape and so forth too. And of course there's the internet, and we do go outside on occasion.

I feel like I miss a whole lot of stupidity. I talk to people a lot, I listen to NPR to keep up on news and the arts and so forth and I read some news and blogs online; but the part of "culture" that you find on regular tv is like predigested junk-food - get away from it for awhile and you'll wonder how on earth you ever spent your time on that crap. To be blunt.

Yes, you are being tracked. I'll start with your mail. I know I've been tracked since the 1960s.

That's when I was "invited" to the local postmaster (in suburban Chicago) to turn over all the "propaganda" I had received from Radio Moscow, Radio Peking (as it was spelled then) and Radio Havana. I was sent the stuff because I was an avid short wave listener at the time, and had sent these "subversive" stations my address. I was threatened with a ticket to Vietnam if I didn't.

It opened my eyes.

They will start to create dossiers on everyone. Every phone call you ever made. Ever post to DU. Every web site you have been to. Every ex-girlfriend you may have emailed while drunk.

And they think I am crazy .. I have to show them the rare msm articles. The nsa whistle blowers who said their office was full of people listening in on troops private sexual calls to their spouses.

My life is basically an open book. Yes, I used to smoke pot. So what? I have bought large recreational (and illegal) explosives on NYC's Canal Street (Chinatown). Big deal. I give modest amounts of money to DU. So arrest me.

I've never killed anyone (intentionally or by accident), decked anyone in a fight, or terrorized small animals with a fork. I almost never carry a weapon (unless you count the Swiss Army knife). I've never stolen anything from anyone. At worst, I broke a few hearts; but mine's been broken a few times, too.

Anyone reading my dossier will be bored to tears. Fine by me. I have no intention of planning or carrying out any destructive criminal acts Not because I'm afraid I'll be caught. But because it's not in my nature to do such things.

But I never forget I'm being tracked. And the folks who dismiss this concept as mere tin hat paranoia do so at their peril.

I think the number of wingnuts who want to see all "liberals" round up and shot is quite small. Most of them don't want us dead. They just want us to shut up.

But if the political mood in the US changes, all bets are off.

There are now a large number of "fusion centers" that are privately funded (think Google). Right now, their operators are more interested in us as consumers than as political independents willing to rock the boat. At least for the time being.

I just think that everyone should be aware that in the 21st century (thanks to the Web), it is very difficult to escape scrutiny. Virtually every keystroke you make can be monitored. I don't think this has had a serious chilling effect on political discourse yet. Otherwise, sites like DU wouldn't exist. But the potential is there.

22. Last year, Intel sent 2 people to my house and asked my wife and I

questions and for our opinion and feelings about this stuff. We told them it was creepy and it had a Big Brother feel about it. While I generally like technology, this can be so easily abused and used for nefarious purposes.
