A beautiful story. Nazi POW bequeathes £400,000 to the British town |
|
where he was held: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/09/26/nazi-pow-bequeaths-400-000-to-the-british-town-where-he-was-held-115875-21702869/The soldier who gave him back his apples and the local people in Scotland must have realised e was too young to now his backside from his elbow. Which is more than can be said of the monied people of the West, who had been such enthusiatic supporters of fascism, and even left Franco and Salazar in place, after the war.

1. I think many American WWII vets instilled similar good will among |
|
those they held captive. Sadly, the Bushies* with their penchance for torture and retribution have destroyed that image of fairness among Americans.

As a matter of fact, my mother used to receive food parcels from a lady by the name of Dickerson, when we were toddlers.

Interesting line about knowing Germany had lost when he saw the British equipment. I assume he meant that the Allied soldiers were well equipped at that point, whereas the Germans were running out of everything.

4. I expect it America that largely funded the prosecution of the war by the Allies, at |
|
least in the later years I should think.
However, Roosevelt was a wiley old bird, even by the standards of Democratic presidents, and the UK only finished paying off its war debt to the US a few years ago. The historian, A J P Taylor, pointed out that of the major leaders concerned in that war, only Roosevelt came out a winner. And that in quite a big way.
