President Obama's speech on Afghanistan sober, pragmatic
Excerpt:

Last night, President Obama spoke before cabiner members and high ranking military leaders as well as the cadets at West Point military academy about the ongoing effort in Afghanistan.

The tone of President Obama's speech was sober and pragmatic. The speech outlined the history of the United States invasion into Afghanistan, reminding the country that it was Afghanistan where the September 11 attacks on the United States were hatched.

He also reminded the audience that going into Afghanistan was supported by the United States after 9/11, as well as Nato and other nations of the world. He said, that America, its allies and the world were acting as one to destroy Al Queda's network. "And only after the Taliban refused to turn over Osama bin Laden, we sent our troops into Afghanistan."

The President continued.

"Within a matter of months, Al Queda was scattered, and many of its operatives were killed. The Taliban was driven from power and pushed back on its heels."

President Obama reminded the audience that after a provisional government was put into place in Afghanistan, things were looking up in Afghanistan.

But then in 2003, the debate began on whether or not to wage a second war in Iraq. For the next six years, the Iraq war drew the majority of our resources, troops and national debate and the war in Afghanistan was all but forgotten except by the troops who were left there and their families.

1. I'm mildly annoyed that some people were expecting a different rhetorical style
What were they expecting? Chants of "yes we can!" and "fired up! ready to go!", and Obama campaign logos?

His style was absolutely appropriate for the setting he was in and the the issue he was addressing.

2. I agree with you completely. And I thought in his speech he sounded
like an adult speaking to adults and for me that was a really nice change, especially thinking back to Bush's speech at West Point when he started his whole pre-emptive strike policy.

3. I still support Obama.
I realize most people posting here don't but I just wanted to say it because I feel that I can't be the only person who does. At least I hope not.
