Houston Is Largest City to Elect Openly Gay Mayor.
Houston became the largest city in the country to elect an openly gay mayor Saturday night, as voters gave a solid victory to the city controller, Annise Parker.

Cheers erupted at Ms. Parker’s campaign party as her opponent, Gene Locke, a former city attorney, conceded defeat after it became clear he could not overcome her lead of 53 percent to 47 percent.

2. YES!
Mayor-elect Annise Parker
City Controller Annise Parker will be Houston's next mayor.

With 99 percent of precincts counted, Parker holds a lead of nearly 8,000 voters. Parker's election-day advantage has reached nearly 11 points.

With 737 of 738 precincts reporting in Harris County and 100 percent in Fort Bend County (slightly less than half of the total), Parker leads former City Attorney Gene Locke by about 5.6 points with 52.8 percent to his 47.2 percent. About 11,000 votes separated them out of more than 155,000.
