A poll finds surprising support among NRA members for some aspects of gun control.

Gun control is one of those culture-wars issues on which liberals and conservatives often don't even seem to be speaking the same language, let alone coming to consensus. Gun owners -- especially the hard-core enthusiasts who belong to the National Rifle Assn. -- are often thought to oppose any restriction on their 2nd Amendment right to bear arms. Except that, according to a recent poll, they don't.

The gun-control debate is replete with suspect polls and fishy statistical analyses, so when Mayors Against Illegal Guns set out to survey gun owners, it knew it would be accused of putting a liberal slant on the questions. That's why the group, a coalition of 500 mayors started in 2006 by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, hired a conservative pollster to do the job: Frank Luntz, an occasional commentator on the Fox News Channel. Luntz surveyed 401 NRA members and 431 gun owners who don't belong to the group, and came up with some surprising results.

When asked whether they supported or opposed a "proposal requiring all gun sellers at gun shows to conduct criminal background checks of the people buying guns," 69% of the NRA members and 85% of the nonmembers were in favor. This goes to the so-called gun-show loophole, which allows used-gun merchants to sell firearms without doing the background checks that are required when selling new guns. Attempts in Congress to close this loophole have died after meeting strong opposition from the NRA.

3. Real gun nuts left the NRA some time ago.

It was too liberal for them. Besides, the membership files of the NRA are being sold to marketers and advertisers. That's a little scary for many. The NRA doesn't sell them themselves, but there are firearms owners lists available for $15/1000 that are about the number of members of the NRA.

One of the buyers, most likely, is the government. Guess where they'll go if they need to find people who own firearms?

my dad's a member. he owns one gun. rarely carries. rarely goes target shooting. he's hardly "hard core"

12. Most of the "hard -cores" I know

The 3-deer a year, coyote, and coon hunters, the competitive high-power and black-powder shooters - want nothing to do with the gun-fetish, gotta pack everywhere I go crowd. And they tell me tales of horror about the militia wannabees who morgateged the house to buy more guns "before it's too late". No bumper stickers, jacket patches, or NRA memberships.
Most of the guys I know who feel the need to pack everywhere are either mouthy drunks (aka "little man's disease") or clinically paranoid.

I do not agree with the nra's position of no waiting period. I am an nra member. And yes I had wolves in the pasture

The ladies I know at Ruger would be glad to make you a nice Mini-14 for your saddle scabbard. Most of the coyote hunters I know are farmers, keeping their young stock safe.
As for the NRA - why support a Republican PAC who does nothing for your gun rights in the real world? Your biggest enemies in that fight are backyard popshooters, slob hunters, and gangsta wannabees - none of whom the NRA even acknowledge.

11. The Gun Culture reminds me of the Limbeciles

OozeBeckistan complains constantly about how the media is left wing, while in fact the ultra-right has nearly complete control over it. The Gun Culture is always whining about how their guns are being grabbed, while the measly gun control we do have gets weaker and weaker by the day. And I have never seen the NRA complain about the erosion of the other amendments.
