Editor & Publisher sold, revived---Back open for business!
Duncan McIntosh Co., an Irvine magazine and newspaper publisher, bought media trade magazine Editor & Publisher from the Nielsen Co. late Thursday afternoon and immediately resumed online operations.

"We're going to continue to be the main information source, the main idea source for the newspaper industry," said Mark Fitzgerald, who was named E&P's editor Thursday. "We're all very excited around here about the news."

Fitzgerald also noted that other media sources "can provide inspiration and innovation for our industry during this time of transition for newspapers."

The print issue of the magazine will return in February and be published monthly after that. Posting on the magazine's two blogs -- Fitz & Jen Give You the Business and the E&P Pub -- will restart today, Fitzgerald said.

. . .

Nielsen officially closed Editor & Publisher on New Year's Eve after announcing in early December that the magazine would cease publication.

Sounds like good news...but then sometimes the "devil is in the details."

2. You are right. Disturbing details in this Forbes article

''Editor & Publisher'' is saved by an Irvine, Calif., boat magazine publisher, but two key staffers will not remain.

http://www.forbes.com/2010/01/15/newspapers-editor-and-publisher-business-media-editorandpublisher.html

Thursday evening, after three hours of e-mails and Twitter feeds carrying rumors that the dying newspaper trade mag Editor & Publisher would be rescued by a mysterious publisher, the magazine's editor, Greg Mitchell, received a call at 6 p.m. On the line was Duncan McIntosh, the Irvine, Calif., publisher of Boating World and FishRap. Mitchell had met McIntosh a week earlier in New York to talk about a possible purchase of E&P. At that meeting, Mitchell says McIntosh told him there was "no question" he would stay on as editor.

Or so he said. Last night the call from McIntosh "was not a cordial conversation," said Mitchell. McIntosh informed him that, yes, he was buying the magazine, but that both Mitchell and E&P veteran editor Joe Strupp would have to go, leaving just four editorial staff in place. The move left E&P fans in shock. Mitchell and Strupp are the twin engines of some of E&P's best editorial work, notably its award-winning coverage of the Iraq war.

Mitchell says the motivation can't be purely financial--neither he nor Strupp draw enormous salaries. McIntosh is producer of the Newport Boat Show, where a 50-foot cruiser named the "Bad Debt" was on sale recently. E&P's liabilities aren't known, and terms of the deal haven't been disclosed.

-------------

The devil sure was hiding in the details

3. OMG...but, I guess we have to see how this plays out... So far
mergers and aquisitions haven't favored Dems.

Thanks for that post. I hope that those who care about "E&P" will follow this and keep us up to date on it.

:-( Trying to be hopeful. One never knows what turns up.

I'll bet a look at McIntosh's record of political donations will reveal his intentions.

5. OFGS...Is this another HOPE of Ours DASHED AGAIN?
Is this true...that there was a deal out there that didn't pan out and now all hopes of E&P's resurrection are now lost?
