... The classic definition of an expression of "free speech" might include slapping a candidate's bumper sticker on your car, sharing your political opinion with a neighbor or writing a letter to your local newspaper. The new definition of the First Amendment, as codified by the court, is more of a mercantile exchange -- like the purchase of a dozen eggs, or a multimillion-dollar TV campaign tarring a politician who advocates greater regulation of your industry as a socialist.

Q: How are lobbyists and media consultants likely to view the decision?

A: Imagine that you're a child whose birthday falls on Christmas, and you wake up that morning to learn that your parents have just won the lottery ...
