"Sometimes there's a subculture within law enforcement that seeks enforcement for the sake of

enforcement. And serious law enforcement professionals need to put a stop to that," said Polis.

Polis compared the situation to alcohol enforcement -- even if the grower broke state law, as the DEA insists, that is an issue that should be left to the state. "Until recently, Colorado had blue laws so we weren't allowed to have liquor stores open on Sunday," said Polis. "I didn't see any federal agents raid liquor stores on Sunday. That was a state issue and so is this."

Can we get some stability in these enforcement agencies, so that those who are depending on this treatment can have some peace?

1. Police work naturally attracts some people with control issues.
The tendency to worry that someone somewhere is getting away with something they disapprove of.

2. It's a distortion of the "graffiti effect" . . .
The notion that if you let high profile nuisance crimes go unpunished, then the whole fabric of the law will begin to unravel.

That may or may not be true, but in this case "the law" has pretty clearly said that this issue is evolving before our eyes and so prosecutions are inappropriate. Which makes the DEA a bunch of asocial bullies.

Anyone here surprised at that assessment?
