Sen. Ensign’s galling claims of innocence
Sen. Ensign’s galling claims of innocence
By Jon Ralston (contact)

Friday, March 12, 2010 | 2 a.m.

In the wake of new revelations in the drip-drip-drip of scandal slowly drenching Sen. John Ensign and washing away any vestiges of his credibility or political life, a national reporter asked me a question: Did I think the latest dollops, spooned out this week by The New York Times and indicating Ensign went out of his way to help his former staffer/former best friend Doug Hampton, whose wife he bedded, might force him to resign?

My answer: If someone could have the stupendous arrogance to sleep with his best friend’s wife while both were on staff, pay them off with $96,000 of parental cash, continue to see the wife while twisting arms to get the cuckold a job, all the while harboring presidential aspirations, why would he not have the hubris to try to tough it out?

Ensign clearly is immune to shame after spending a public career on a moral high horse while horsing around in private. This is a man who put a false front to the world, the sanctimonious Senate preacher actually living a double life at that Playboy Mansion East on C Street. And now, with two probes closing in on him like a vise, Ensign, through his spokesman, offers up fodder no nightclub comic could lampoon: “Sen. Ensign has consistently acted in an ethical manner to avoid even the appearance of impropriety.”

My God, man. Or as Hampton put it in an e-mail discovered by the Times: “Who are you John? ... You continue to reveal who you really are ... a self-centered, self consumed person who only cares for their (sic) own well being.”

1. Ensign
Here in Nevada, rednecks sport bumper stickers that say " Harry Reid is a disgrace to Nevada".

I have asked a few of these knuckledraggers to explain to me that if Reid is a disgrace, then what the fuck is John Ensign?

Some of them have actually said, with a straight face even, that Ensign is a good, decent man, who just made a mistake.

It's enough to make your head spin like the "Exorcist".

3. And it is with such people that there is no sense arguing
Some people are just willfully ignorant. All that arguing with them will get you is raised blood pressure. Ensign has not "just made a mistake." He has made several critical errors that render him unfit to represent Nevada in Congress.

5. Accordin to Obama, Ensign and his wife are Sanctified by God
And as such they deserve rights others do not get to have. Like Obama, Ensign is a big Christian 'defender of marriage'. Here he is on the subject:
"Marriage is the cornerstone on which our society was founded. For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply point out that marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution and the founding of our nation."
A really lovely bunch of people. The anti equality set, so much to admire among their number! Their glory reflects on all who share their love of discrimination.

Yet another example of the double standard.

Democrats have to leave public life in shame. Spitzer. Edwards. The NJ Governor. Paterson. And so on.

But Vitter, or Larry Craig, or Ensign stay put.

The party of NO is also the party of No Responsibility.
