April 19th

We're coming up on April 19th. This date has become important to the nation's discontented, especially those who like guns.

On the upcoming April 19th, the "Oath Keepers" plan to march in the nation's capitol. This is a rapidly growing association of current and former military and law enforcement personnel who've sworn an oath to uphold the constitution, even if ordered otherwise Members claim they will not process U.S. citizens into a military tribunal or a detention camp. That's laudable. However where were they when the Bush administration enacted these measures? The truth is they are simply an anti-Obama group. Click here to read their profile in Mother Jones Magazine.

Also in Washington on April 19th will be members of Second Amendment March, a pro-gun group that has been holding rallies across the country. According to these folks, the Democratic administration wants to take their guns. Yet it was President Obama who made carrying firearms in national parks legal again. In an ironic twist, Second Amendment plan to hold its rally on national park land. Do you think they will see the irony?

Why celebrate on April 19th? It was on this day in 1995 that a truck full of explosives destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, killing 168 people. Timothy McVeigh the perpetrator wanted to attack the federal government. Why? Remember Waco?

On April 19th, 1993 an assault on the Waco cult headquarters of the Branch Davidian sect by federal agents ended in a deadly fire and the death of 70 cult members including the cults leader David Koresh. Years later McVeigh would claim that his actions were in response to the Federal government's assault in Waco.
