Brown announces May 6 election date

A tightly contested general election campaign has kicked off with a rampant Tory Party threatening to plunge further along the disastrous path opened up by new Labour.

Within minutes of Prime Minister Gordon Brown confirming May 6 as polling day, cocky Tory leader David Cameron declared: "If we win we are going to shake things up."

Labour activists across Britain prepared for a determined fightback to stop the Tories coming to power and launching renewed Thatcherite attacks on the unions and living standards.

Left Labour MP John McDonnell issued an urgent call for an end to new Labour's damaging public-spending cuts.

He warned that many voters felt there was no real choice, with three major parties demanding ruthless cuts.
