Legislation will burden us with debt(Columbus Dispatch, April 8, 2010)What a tragedy that President Barack Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, both Democrats, have coerced and intimidated our legislators into passing the health-care-overhaul bill, which is nothing more than a sinking ship.
This action will result in incomprehensible debt for our country, from which we cannot recover. For many years, the method of operation for the Democratic Party has been to make our citizens become more and more dependent upon the government. The Democratic goal is to establish single-payer health insurance.
No doubt, premiums for those of us who have health insurance will skyrocket, because health-insurance companies will be in fear for their very lives. Within a short time, government health insurance will be established, offering "bargain rates" with "bargain" care. Health-insurance companies will be destroyed and their employees will be laid off until our private insurance industry is ruined. Unemployment will become worse than ever.
People's options for health insurance will become more and more limited, and our freedom of choice will erode to nothing.
The law soon will make it harder for people to get medical care, and services will start to be rationed. Imagine having to wait longer than ever to get certain necessary treatments, for which timeliness means everything.
The Democrats don't want us to stand on our own two feet. They want Americans to have no hope other than their hope in the great all-knowing government that cares for us and tells us what is best for us. The Democrats want us to look to government to solve all of our problems.
We should hold firm and stand up for our rights and privileges as Americans before we lose all of them.
BRENDA S. HILL
Reynoldsburg
So, to summarize, Ms. Hill (or is it Mr. Beck?) believes that as a result of health care reform:
- The country will be driven into "incomprehensible" debt from which it cannot recover.
- Premiums for people who have health insurance will skyrocket.
- Health insurance companies will be destroyed.
- Insurance workers will all lose their jobs.
- The entire private insurance industry will be ruined.
- Unemployment will worsen.
- People will have increasingly limited health-insurance options.
- Americans' "freedom of choice" will be completely taken away.
- It will be harder for people to get medical care.
- Medical services will be rationed.
- Necessary treatment will require longer and longer waiting time.
- We will lose all of our rights and privileges as Americans.
That's quite a list!
I would like to see the paper re-publish this letter each year on April 8, so we can check on how many of Ms. Hill's predictions come true as the years go by.
