Arizona Says It Will Pull Plug on LA's Electricity
Arizona Fights Back Against Boycott Threats Due to Immigration Law
Arizona Says It Will Pull Plug on LA's Electricity
By EMILY FRIEDMAN
May 19, 2010

Arizona is threatening to leave Los Angeles in the dark -- and its air conditioners without power -- if the city doesn't rescind its order to boycott the state over Arizona's tough new immigration law ...

Pierce sent a letter to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa Tuesday explaining his stance on the issue and urging him to "reconsider the wisdom of attempting to harm Arizona's economy."

"If they're really serious about this, then be true to your conviction," Pierce told ABCNews.com. "I would be happy to help them to renegotiate the power agreements so they no longer receive power from Arizona."

"When temperatures rise over 100 degrees we're going to love to have the extra power," he said ...

8. Three California Utility Companies co-own Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant...
...so that strategy isn't going to work for them anyway.

It's a weak faux-thread.

Not gonna happen!

5. And why does Arizona have that kind of "power" over L.A.?
Not because AZ has solar, wind, or hydro - it's because they have the largest source of consistent, 24/7 power in the country.

"The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, located about 55 miles west of Phoenix, has been the largest power producer of any kind in the United States since 1992. Its three units are capable of generating nearly 4,000 megawatts of electricity.

Because of its desert location, Palo Verde is the only nuclear plant in the United States that does not sit on a large body of water. Instead, it uses treated effluent from several area municipalities to meet its cooling water needs, recycling 20 billion gallons of wastewater each year.

Palo Verde, the largest single commercial taxpayer in Arizona, is operated by APS and is owned by a consortium of seven utilities in the Southwest. APS owns 29.1 percent of the plant."

7. What's even more interesting are the Southern California utilities that are part owners..
Edited on Wed May-19-10 10:17 PM by Make7
... of Palo Verde:

  • Southern California Edison: 15.8%
  • Southern California Public Power Authority: 5.9%
  • Los Angeles Department of Water and Power: 5.7%

It is difficult to believe one could cut off power to a part owner.

9. You're right. This was a tongue in cheek sort of comment, blown out of proportion.
Sort of like, "don't want anything from AZ, well how would you like to not get any electrons, huh?" or similar.

Yeah we will cut all economic ties with you except for the electricity that we depend on. What kind of boycott is that?

15. I think the "boycotts" are primarily saying "We haven't got a clue who you might detain
for not having papers, and it's just not really to our advantage to spend lots of time trying to solve the legal problems you would create for our society members or city employees by throwing them into the jaws of the immigration system where lots of citizens and other people legally in the country have been known to disappear for months as if they had no rights at all"

LA for example has a big Hispanic population. If LA sends city employees to Arizona on official business, and they get detained without their birth certificates or passports or whatever, LA might have a major frickin headache

18. Nobody
will get detained, they will have a California drivers license with a california home address. Most likely they will have a state credit card.
So much of the Arizona law is overblown with paranoid hyperbole. It is modeled after the Federal law which gentler than the law in either Canada or Mexico. If you are in Mexico illegally you go to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200 dollars.

There is no bond or appeal process you are deported no questions asked.

21. It's possible Arizona might accept California driver licenses; I don't
know California license issuance procedures, so can't assess how the California licenses stack up under 1070. After reading 1070, I suspect my North Carolina license would not be acceptable to Arizona authorities. I don't find any explicit reference to credit cards in 1070, so I can't assess your claim that "a state credit card" would satisfy Arizona authorities

Of course, none of that matters to someone whose wallet is stolen by an Arizona mugger and who Arizona police then decide is "illegal" and hand over to US immigration authorities

Under current US law, persons, who are accused of being present in the US without appropriate documentation, have many fewer rights than persons known to be citizens or lawful residents -- even if they are actually citizens or lawful residents. There are no official statistics on the subject, so it is difficult to know how common it is, but in recent years current cases have come to light of US citizens confined in immigration detention facilities for many months, without any access to legal help, or of US citizens improperly deported; some links to DU threads are given below

It is ironic, of course, that you would compare the Arizona law to the laws of Mexico or Canada: as a US citizen, sitting here in North Carolina, I should not think that Arizona is for me analogous to a foreign country; in the past, I have been able to travel there freely without fear that state authorities might decide to arrest me and toss me into a US immigration nightmare, simply because they thought I might be here illegally
