Frank Schaeffer: Obama Will Triumph, So Will America

Before he’d served even one year President Obama lost the support of the easily distracted left and engendered the white hot rage of the hate-filled right. But some of us, from all walks of life and ideological backgrounds -- including this white, straight, 57-year-old, former religious right wing agitator, now progressive writer and (given my background as the son of a famous evangelical leader) this unlikely Obama supporter -- are sticking with our President. Why?-- because he is succeeding.

We faithful Obama supporters still trust our initial impression of him as a great, good and uniquely qualified man to lead us.

Obama’s steady supporters will be proved right. Obama’s critics will be remembered as easily panicked and prematurely discouraged at best and shriveled hate mongers at worst.

only the easily distracted (more on this in a sec). Just like he isn't saying that ALL of the right is hate-filled. Can we agree on that?

And by "easily distracted" I think he means sacrificing the big picture for small victories. And even as I typed that I imagined all the ways that explanation could be flipped on me in a very angry response so you don't have to bother.

This Frank Shaeffer guy hasn't done one useful, productive thing in his life. I'll believe the real laborers in this country first. There's still a lot more of them, and they are NOT pleased.

Faithful. This isn't an issue of belief, it's cold, hard fact. Obama is not succeeding, and he's not even trying. He can't even keep the illusion going.

13. Frank was a professional hate monger for many years

Made bank doing it. He still engages, almost automatically, in the use of fear and divisions as his main methods. For Frank, there is always, always an 'us' and a 'them' and Frank has something to sell, always, to those he calls 'us'.
This man did great harm to our nation, he and his father were the chief engineers of the 'religious right'. This man is personally responsible for helping to build the anti gay, anti choice agenda of the right wing. He claims that he and his father did not hate gay people, but they still teamed up to make a hate message with the Rushdoony crowd, and they did that for power and money. I assume Frank kept the wealth. He never mentions that aspect of his hate ministry, the giant amount of books he and his daddy sold.
He has much, much to make up for. And yet here again he seems to be bashing people who seek equal rights when that is counter to the religion he and the President share. His words, just as they always did, serve Frank as the judge, and the 'other' held up as flawed and in need of being told.
I have personally heard Frank breath fire and invective against my people. He still holds on to that. He and his father made alliances around religion for the sake of political gain. Not good people at all.
Frank is one of the most harmful Americans of my lifetime. He should be in constant apology. But instead, he is still telling liberals and gays we are somehow flawed in the eyes of an Evangelist.
