Health reform puts women in harm’s way

August 31, 2010 by Healthcare-NOW!

By M. Tracey Brooks for the Times Union –

The people of New York and the nation should be outraged at the sacrifices being made in health care reform to the detriment of women. After taking a major hit in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed in March, women’s health care faced three more attacks in July alone.

The health care reform package passed in March contains severe new abortion coverage restrictions. Federal funding of abortion has always been prohibited. The new law, however, severely restricts access to abortion coverage in the insurance exchanges, even for individuals who pay for coverage with their own money.

Women (or their spouses, partners or parents) will have to write one check for abortion coverage and a separate check for the rest of their coverage. Insurance industry experts believe the administrative nightmare of keeping these funds separate will dissuade insurers from maintaining abortion coverage in their plans. Congress sacrificed this important women’s health care benefit to pass the reform package.

Attacks on women’s health care continue. In July, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proposed a rule to eliminate coverage for abortion in the states’ new temporary high-risk insurance plans, with the exception of rape, incest or to preserve the life of the woman. There is no exception to preserve the health of a woman with such conditions as kidney disease or cancer.............................

1. There are clueless people on DU who don't think this is a problem.
They'll be along soon to lecture us silly women about how we don't really need abortion coverage.

This post dropped like a stone. Nobody cares. So stop your whining, you silly woman. If you have to die, or suffer life-long health problems to appease the gods of "moderate" womb slavery, just suck it up and deal.

Sheesh. You act like your "rights" (ha ha, I made a funny!) should have something to do with your vote.

8. Well, it must be "moderate"
It's not like they're saying you can't have an abortion at all (that would be extreme womb slavery) as long as you can pay for it. Of course, abortions due to health complications are very, very expensive, but still, it's not like they're being extremists or anything. As long as you're rich, you're free to get any health care you want.

Kind of like it is now for everybody, only after HCR, that situation will only apply to women's reproductive organs. See? Progress!

9. Bill Press was complaining how critics of Obama are all just whiners
today on his radio show. He played a clip of the woman in the town hall yesterday who said she was tired of defending him. Bill went on and on about whiners. I shut it off.

But you are right. Not many interested in the in the OP---just whining as Bill Press would say (He is a Left radio talk host BTW).

to explain these things so I don't have to bother my pretty little head with figuring it out!

That said, I don't hate Obama. I just don't think much of him, either. I'll vote for him in 2012 if he's the nominee, and count it a rational act. But I'm not expecting to have a lot of enthusiasm about it, and the reason for that is the way he's leapt to trade away women's rights at the first - and every - sign of resistance.

Yes, the first bill he signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and that was great. But it's like he figures that one thing gives him a free pass with women for the rest of his term, and it doesn't. Not to mention, 3 days before he signed that, he dropped Medicaid-matching funds for states to expand contraceptive coverage from the stimulus bill. So the *first* thing he did "for" women was to sell them out.

11. For what it is worth this man cares and understands that
the Obama Administration is wrong on this, like it is wrong on so many issues facing its Base.

7. totally fucked up
why don't they just make provisions regarding pregnancy based on 1) you didn't enjoy the sex or 2) you did enjoy the sex - and be done with it? Really, isn't that what it is really about?
