Pastor who threatened to burn Korans told to pay police bill

US pastor Terry Jones, who threatened to burn copies of the Koran, has been told he must pay $180,000 (£115,000) for security costs triggered by the controversy.

The city of Gainesville, Florida said that local police agencies spent more than a month working on security plans to ensure the community close to the planned site of the burning was safe.

1. I hate to say this...
...but isn't that what our tax dollars are for? The police were under no compulsion to provide security for the event.

Next thing you know, Florida will charge freed prison inmates for their meals and bunk. Oh, wait...

we pay taxes to take care of even the idiots who want to assemble to have free speech. Their taxes are also paying when someone I agree with wants to have a public rally.

now, if he did something illegal and it resulted in city expenses, then I say throw the receipt-book at 'em

3. Has this happened before?
Not a particulary good precedent to set.
