Bloomberg ousted as New York's richest by alleged Tea Party-backer billionaire David Koch

Mayor Bloomberg has been supplanted as New York's richest man - by a reputed Tea Party bankroller.

David Koch, who is also a leading Manhattan philanthropist and generous giver to cancer research, was ranked with his brother Charles in fifth place on the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans with a combined fortune of $21.5 billion.

They deny being in the movement, but Koch money has funded arch-conservative groups opposed to social security and skeptical of global warming that have harshly attacked President Obama, according to the New Yorker.

"With this elite group, it doesn't depend on who is in the White House," Forbes Global Wealth Editor Luisa Kroll said Wednesday. "In the case of the Koch brothers, oil and gas has done well and that's a big chunk of their fortune."
