Dark days ahead for Tony Blair
LABOUR’S loss of its once impregnable stronghold of Newcastle was the most painful blow of the kicking John Prescott admitted the Government had received in local elections this week.

While losing more than 300 councillors in England and Wales was unpleasant enough, to see the Liberal Democrats seize one of their safer cities could open a major fault line in the party’s heartlands.

Tomorrow the Euro election result promises more bad news for Labour. But the silver lining is that with the UK Independence Party (UKIP), spearheaded by former Labour MP and TV presenter Robert Kilroy-Silk, on the move, it could be even worse for the Tories and Lib Dems. Growing discontent with Brussels should see the newcomers to the political fray doing real damage to the Conservatives and to Mr Kennedy’s troops in the south-west of England over fishing policy.
