Some in G.O.P. Find Soft Spot for Bill Clinton.
Many Republicans with a deep animus for President Obama find their hearts aflutter with the memory of a former leader. He was a compassionate conservative, a guy who cared about free trade, a man who reached across the aisle.

He is the husband of the secretary of state.

Senator Orrin G. Hatch recently said that former President Bill Clinton “will go down in history as a better president” than the sitting one. Sean Hannity of Fox News, who has verbally abused Mr. Clinton for years, recently referred to him as “good old Bill.” Republicans in Congress have begun speaking of him with respect, even pining.

1. Of course - he was basically a Reagan Republican
with fiscal discipline.

2. Not in office anymore. No reason to take him down.
Plus, and I'm gonna say it--he's a white southerner.

4. He played the republican game better than they ever could
That's why they hated his guts. Now that they no longer have to deal with him they have nothing to lose and they can praise him.

I used to like him but I think that was mostly because the lunatic fringe despised him.

6. Sometime in mid-2008, the Right sent out a memo that the era of Clinton Haters was over
OK, there was no memo, but after Hillary flamed out in the primaries, conservatives no longer had to concern themselves with the Clintons anymore.

After all, they have a new enemy now.

8. Why WOULDN'T they like him? After '94, El Perro Grande basically said "how high?"
every time the 'pugs said "jump".

He didn't even try to regain a Democratic majority in Congress in '96, when that should have been an EASY re-take.
