Bank of America: How NOT to Defend Yourselves in the New Media
Just when I think our Oligarchs and their corporate helots have demonstrated the absolute apex in cluelessness, they prove me wrong... again, and again, and again.

I'm genuinely awestruck by this latest outbreak of cluelessness: Painting a giant "new media" target on the backs of their institution and the Oligarchs on its Board of Directors.

Someone must have told them about Teh Tubes. Oh NOES!!!! They could get MOCKED!

Wikileaks has announced that "soon" they will reveal things about SOME major banking institution that are likely to lead to a resignation from its head honcho.

Apparently Bank of America has good reason to believe that there IS something about their conduct that will be damaging enough, if it becomes known, for serious digestive end product to intersect with a rotary air propulsion device. Gee. We all suspected that, but now we're not only positive that's the case, but they're affirming it with every new step they take to head off flak from Teh Tubes.

"Bank of America has reputedly established a 'war room' to draw up strategy and rebutt allegations likely to emerge from the publication of thousands of internal documents by WikiLeaks."

Okay, I guess that makes a twisted kind of sense. Over reaction, maybe. But they're jittery. I'll spot them the "war room."

But here's where it gets truly wacky: "According to Domain Name Wire, the US bank has been aggressively registering domain names including its board of Directors' and senior executives' names followed by "sucks" and "blows".

No, really!!

I COULD NOT make that up. No, really. My imagination boggles at anything that monumentally clueless.

Apparently they think they're on top of this "Internets" thing.

Except that no one has told them that in the loose, vestigially-organized universe of Internet hackers, pranksters, /b/enizens, etc., there is a semi-respected sort-of convention that the privacy of individuals who do not voluntarily make targets of themselves is usually more or less respected.

And BofA has just drawn gigantic targets on the backs of their officers and directors.

"For example, the company registered a number of domains for CEO Brian Moynihan: BrianMoynihanBlows.com, BrianMoynihanSucks.com, BrianTMoynihanBlows.com, and BrianTMoynihanSucks.com."

Red rag: Bull: Wave

Seriously. Do they realize they have chosen to escalate a war they cannot win and don't even have the weapons to fight on a marginally equal basis?

I'll do ya a favor, BofA helots. I'll start a list for you, of all the domain names you need to be registering. It won't do you any good, of course, since as fast as you can get them registered, the segment of Netizens who can't resist a good mock at the expense of an eminently mockable target will invent hundreds, nay, thousands of new ones.

And remember: Not only do you need to register the .com version of every name, but the .net, .org, .biz, .us, .everystatedesignation, etc. Say, about a dozen versions of EVERY SINGLE ONE.

And remember also: For each individual's name you try to protect, there are several versions that need to be protected:

FirstLast
FirstMILast
First_Last
First_MI_Last (Just for starters. That's not even including nicknames like "Dave" for "David," "Sue" for "Susan," "Bill" for "William," etc. Oh, we could do this for MONTHS!)

So, at a minimum, we're up to 48 domain names for each opprobrious epithet.

Now, let's start on some of the opprobrious epithets:

CharlesHollidayConMan

GrifterBrianMoynihan

ScamArtistBOARobertScully

BarbaraDesoarSleaze

ChuckOHollidayCheats

SallieKrawchekLies

LiarBrianTMoynihan

Dang, I have to get back to work. Seriously. I could do this all day!

And if I can do this as a mere thought experiment (because I'm basically just too well-behaved to really throw a couple of bucks at any of these,) just imagine what the more maliciously inclined might manage?

Dudes. You are playing whack-a-mole with an infinite field of holes and a very small mallet.

I can't feel too much sympathy for you. You deserve whatever you get.

Welcome to the New Media, Alice.

interestedly,
Bright

8. Megabanks vs Whistle-blowers
Crimes committed by the big banks helped crash our economy -- and WikiLeaks is saying that a whistle-blower has sent them enough evidence to take down Bank of America. So now the big banks are fighting back by trying to get the government to muzzle future whistle-blowers.

They want rules to force whistle-blowers to go to their bosses before going to the government -- giving employers the perfect chance to shut them up! Even the Securities and Exchange Commission admits that its proposed rules could "discourage" whistleblowers.

Will you help us protect financial reform, by telling the SEC to implement strong, pro-whistle-blower rules right away?

http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/whistle...

PETITION TO THE SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION: More whistle-blowing about corporate crimes could have made the foreclosure crisis and economic meltdown less severe.

Whistle-blowers should never be forced or encouraged to take their concerns to their potentially corrupt bosses first: Those who go directly to the government deserve the strongest rewards and protections allowed by law.
