Press TV has conducted an interview with author and film director Danny Schechter in which he discusses his film and book Plunder: The Crime of Our Time, which exposes the banking bailouts and the corruption of big business in America.
Press TV: As we count down the year end festivities around the world, let's go to New York City and talk with Danny Schechter, the News Dissector. Danny, welcome back to On the Edge.
Schechter: Well, thank you Max. I'm even more on the edge now than I was when we spoke before. So, many Americans are as well. This used to be the season to be jolly but I don't think a lot of people are jolly with the unemployment going up, foreclosures mounting and a general sense of anxiety pervading the society. You know America is a land of great trouble these days. I don't know if you saw a recent interview with Ben Bernanke on 60 minutes. The man's lip was quavering. He looked completely shaky. He was trying to reassure us but his appearance belied his reassurance. So, it seems as if the worst is still to come.
Press TV: Okay Danny, you have recently made a film, called Plunder the Crime of Our Time, covering a lot of the banking crimes and certainly many people around the world have been talking about the banksters as they are known around the world. Let me ask you a question about the US economy because the US economy is presumably a free market capitalist society. So, booms and busts are to be expected. However, at the moment it seems as though there is something else going on here. It seems as though the US economy has entered a permanently dark winter of permanently lower wages, permanently lower interest on savings and really at the same time the top one percent are just running away with everything. What has happened to the basic underlying business of the US?
