What about Howard Dean for Democratic nominee in 2012? We need a Democrat in the race, don't you
think? He's a guy who knows who his adversaries are - (not the "professional left"), not the base of the Democratic Party. Here's a guy who isn't afraid to fight for the people and what's right.

Man what a refreshing change THAT would be!

1. Too bad Dean himself has ruled it out.
But hey, this is DU. Knock yourself out.

7. NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE. He does not feel throwing Obama out is feasible and feels it would
weaken the party. BUT, given how Obama performs here on out and what the situation is over in Corporate Lobbyist party-land is (pray for Palin - Darth Vader ticket) he could change his mind.

Really, if Obama shows he's too costly for our democracy (compromises with CorpLobbyist Pary, as opposed to fighting for what should and can be successfully fougth for) he would conclude the switch could and should be done.

9. And I could play third base for the Sox. Maybe I'm odd in this regard..
...but I think the best oracle to consult on the good doctor's future plans is the good doctor.

(Full disclosure -- I was a 2003 and 2004 donor ans 2004 caucus and state convention delegate for Dean.)

Not that either one is particularly likely.

3. People pretty much no longer care about Democratic values
"Winning" is everything, so they'll back Obama regardless of how far right he is.

Values now are interchangeable between the two party's.

17. Im (really) afraid we will ......as it stands now
Obama will give more soaring speech's promising to be the progressive we need, then those with short memories of past empty promises will be swayed once again to vote for him.

4. The good news is Howard Dean won us seats in new territories.
The bad news is, some of those seats went to Blue Dogs.

The good news is that those Blue Dogs frequently lost re-election, while the Progressive Caucus gained in membership under that forgettable new dude who replaced Howard Dean.

Maybe Dr. Dean needs to implement a 50-state policy for Progressives, and not just for Democrats?

10. Never going to happen.
I'd love it, but it's not going to happen.

Nobody will run against Obama in the primary. I wish someone would and stood a chance, but there's just no way. The person running would need to be progressive and stand up for progressive values, and the Democratic party is just not going to have that.

Might it not be better if there's a candidate that actually wants to run?

13. no one is going to challenge a popular president.
we as leftists need to get over that idea.

the things we need to put our energy into have nothing to do with 2012 presidential politics.

18. He won't. Please stop posting such threads.
I am a dyed-in-the wool, true-blue Deaniac and have been since 2003. I have met Dr. Dean in person.

If you really knew him and had been paying attention, you would know that there is no way that he would ever run against an incumbent Democratic President. None whatsoever.

That does not mean that I wouldn't wish for it because I think that he would make - and would have made - the kind of difference that we have needed for far too long.

But he won't. Period.

19. It all depends on how many jobs from now until August
If our economy grows by 200,000 jobs per month from January to August then it will be almost
impossible for ANY democrat to challenge President Obama.

But if job growth remains inconsistent, or if the numbers are uninspiring, then I sure hope
that President Obama is challenged.

This is because in 2012 there will be only 1 democrat who the Reptilicans can defeat in a
head to head race: President Obama.

Dick Gephardt?

23. I like the idea. Does he have a twin?
If the unions would get together and create a platform and run a couple of candidates in the primaries it would be at least a way to put pressure on Obama to cave to us instead to the Republicans.
