George Langworthy and Maryam Henein started following the issue of Colony Collapse Disorder and the mystery around disappearing bees when it first broke four years ago. Realizing the significance of what was happening, they put everything into getting the story out and becoming bee advocates. They created Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Ellen Page.
“We consider the documentary Vanishing of the Bees to be not just a movie -- but a movement,” says Langworthy. The film has led to partnerships with beekeepers, gardeners, local farmers, environmentalists and food advocates. “The massive concern for bees from people in all walks of life and all around the world has been amazing and inspiring.”
Everyone should be concerned about bees. These hardworking pollinators are responsible for as much as one-third of our food, as well as keeping wildlife habitats healthy. And bees are in trouble.
The Vanishing of the Bees team started out promoting everyday actions people can take, like "voting with your fork." But when the WikiLeaks story around the pesticide clothianidin broke, their activism became more political.
