HRW highlights Egypt human rights violations in annual report

CAIRO: U.S.-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Egypt of “widespread discrimination” against its Christians and other religious minorities in its annual report for 2010, released on Monday.

The report also highlights repression of political dissent.

HRW said the 21st annual World Report summarizes human rights conditions in more than 90 countries and territories worldwide. It reflects extensive investigative work undertaken in 2010 by Human Rights Watch staff, usually in close partnership with domestic human rights activists.

In its section for Egypt, the organization said the Egyptian Government continued to suppress political dissent in 2010, dispersing demonstrations; harassing rights activists; and detaining journalists, bloggers, and Muslim Brotherhood members. Security officers used lethal force against migrants attempting to cross into Israel and arbitrarily detained recognized refugees.
