If Al Gore had been this brave in 2000 we wouldn't be in this fix.

Someone who is stays with the program for 5 seconds longer than everyone else. It is highly situational.

Who knew, back then, that things would sink to this level?

I would say that Al has more than redeemed himself, if he needed any redemption.
