The real Enemy Within: Creeps who write things like The Enemy Within.
I just came back from Borders and got a copy of Michael "Savage" Weiner's The Enemy Within. In my defense, it was half-off, and I got an extra 10% because I'm a club member. :)

I've read things that are slightly stupider, slightly more hateful, and slightly more disturbing than Savage, but I have NEVER read anything so unbelievably ironic.

I'm only at the first chapter, but I've already read something so ironic I must share it with all of you. Hateful I'm fine with. Vehemently liberalphobic I'm used to. But this level of irony makes my eyes bleed.

From the first chapter, Freedom: The Savage Nation:

"I don't want my children's children to inherit a broken nation. I don't want my grandchildren to inherit a land whose people fled tyranny only to bring tyranny here. Everything so many backward migrants run from they bring with them.

Their hatred.

Their bigotry.

Their small-mindedness.

Their religious extremism.

America wasn't built on those value. She was built on the backs of immigrants who knew how to work, not how to work the system. On immigrants who learned the language, not corrupted it. They embraced a hard work ethic.

A love for God."

It goes on, and his note about a love for God is even more disturbing and ironic when put into the context of the rest of the book. But still... I've never read anything so unbelievably ironic. Gah.

Oh, and I feel the need to point this out, because I found this out only last week:

THERE IS A GAP AT THE CORNER OF HAIGHT AND ASHBURY!!!!

Sigh.

1. That is pretty friggin stupid if you ask me.
Seems to describe the small-mindedness and authoritarian nature of the Bush administration to a tee.

2. I've never paid any attention to Michael Wiener
Of all the rw talk show hosts, he seems particularly pathetic. The guy re-names himself savage implying that there is "something" in a name; but, if he actually believes that; what does his real name make him believe about himself?

4. I'm not proud of it!
But if it helps, it was half off (Clearence table), and I got another 10% off for being a club member. I was tempted to ask them to ring up Clinton's book and just let me take Weiner's book home, but I decided it was unethical. And they wouldn't let me (though in fairness, it was an even balance of both).

It's really educational, though. I mean, here we have a screed that shows no concept of historical context, that sees the past through rose-tinted lenses that most 'conservatives' seem to have. Everything was wonderful and perfect in the past, then the 60's came along, everyone smoked pot and discovered sex and everything turned to crap. Of course, historians have proven this wrong, and the Leave It To Beaver dreams of these guys are as unrealistic as Star Trek. Teen pregnancy was unbelievably high at that time, though no one dared talk about, and domestic violence was frighteningly common.

But it's the fucked up irony of everything he says that really gets me.

Immigrants today suck! They're lazy good-for-nothings who work the system, drain America, and pollute our culture with their foreign languages! Not like the immigrants of yesterday, who had strong work ethics and helped make America great!

(Of course, at the time they were seen to work the system, drain America, and pollute our culture with their foreign languages. If Weiner EVER used the word 'schmuck,' a Yiddish term, he should be smacked for his rallying against language assimilation. That and the fact that his studio/office is in San Francisco, near the Embarcadero, undoubtedly adjactent to countless other Spanish-named locations.)

Muslims suck! They're hateful terrorist extremists who will do anything in the name of their god! And while we're at it, why do liberals keep wanting to take God out of our society? Shame on them!

Just... so damn ironic. I've read stupider things (though not much stupider), and more hateful things (though not much more hateful), but I've never read anything so ironic.
