The Federal Trade Commission announced a multi-state crackdown on employment and work-at-home scams that take advantage of the unemployed.
More than 90 job schemes were hit with lawsuits or judgments as part of the roundup announced by the FTC on Wednesday, including suits by the FTC against:* National Sales Group and I Life Marketing, also doing business as Executive Sales Network and Certified Sales Jobs, which took in $8 million from job seekers by falsely promising it had an inside track to get them jobs at Fortune 1000 companies. Job hunters were supposed to be charged $38 but the company almost tripled the fee and then charged some applicants monthly fees of $14.
* Ivy Capital Inc. and 29 co-defendants, (see below) who allegedly raked in more than $40 million from people who believed Ivy Capital and related companies could help them develop their own Internet businesses and earn up to $10,000 per month. Victims paid thousands of dollars apiece, believing they were going to receive "coaching" to help them create successful businesses. But the FTC said the coaches didn't have the proper expertise, the software didn't work and the lawyers and accountants who were supposed to lend aid just didn't exist. The agency got a temporary order freezing the company's assets.
