At a time when public school students are being forced into ever more crowded classrooms, and poor families will lose state medical benefits, New York State is paying 10 times more for state employees’ pensions than it did just a decade ago.

The gist is that it's all the public employees' fault NY is strapped for cash.Hey, isn't that where Wall Street is?
I can't tell who the author is.maybe its because I'm on the mobile site, but it just doesn't say.
Love that liberal NY Times.

1. state workers' salaries & benefits are 20% of the budget -- unless they're "reined in" |
|
the state won't be able to provide essential services?
huh?
those are the salaries and benefits of the firefighters, police, teachers, & state workers who provide the essential services.
what does the other 80% go for?
that doesn't even make sense.

3. This reminds me of how school districts have to explain |

to the budget-voting public why salaries make up the bulk of expenses. If you're not spending money on those who are actually doing the education, what would you prefer the money be spent on? The cost of equipment is minor compared to salaries. I do the budget proposal for myself and two other chemistry teachers. Our combined salaries are over $150K (22 years, 21 years and 4 years), but the amount we budget for equipment is typically $2000 or less. This includes laboratory equipment and chemicals. Of course salaries are going to make up the bulk of a service industry's budget. Anyone who thinks differently isn't thinking.
