Recent efforts by Republican politicians to eliminate federal funding of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have focused on NPR’s supposed “liberal bias.” In fact, Republicans, as is so often the case, have mistaken the truth for liberal bias. To be fair and balanced to Republicans, the two are virtually indistinguishable to them.
Now, Republicans avoid the truth like the Wicked Witch of the West avoids water, so it stands to reason that the truth, like liberal bias, elicits fear and loathing in Republicans whenever they encounter it. Why, you might ask, do Republicans fear the truth? Simple. Republicans seek to justify pathological selfishness by institutionalizing it as a political philosophy. But, as we have established, the truth is just liberal bias by another name, and you can’t support the cornerstone of Republican philosophy with liberal bias, now can you?
Republicans try to legitimize their position with the Latin phrase, “Caveat Emptor,” which translates as “Let the Buyer Beware.” Let us parse this phrase. The word, “buyer” implies that there is a seller.
“Beware,” suggests that whatever product or service the seller is peddling is being misrepresented. In other words, the seller is lying.
