Krugman: the rich are different from you and me:
when they break the law, it’s the prosecutors who find themselves on trial.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/14/opinion/14krugman.html?_r=1&hp

....The immediate flashpoint is a proposed settlement between state attorneys general and the mortgage servicing industry. That settlement is a “shakedown,” says Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama. The money banks would be required to allot to mortgage modification would be “extorted,” declares The Wall Street Journal. And the bankers themselves warn that any action against them would place economic recovery at risk. (more)

1. Our tax dollars paid the banks for the underwater mortgages..
Why should they get another dime for these mortages... They are paid in full and the banks should send us a thank you note...

3. Krugman is not among "you and me"
Anybody who seats with literal royalty is playing in the rich man's league, and is not in the same boat as the rest of us.

4. I'm sorry, but "sitting" with royalty and being "royalty" are *much* different. (nt)

5. You don't get that invite unless you are already "in" with the elite
"You and me" would never get an offer to escort a Princess. Krugman is their man, not ours.

6. You don't know me and I don't know you so how can you make an assumption like that? (nt)

7. Like the elites would be here on DU?
you're sitting here posting at midnight, I'd wager there's slim chance indeed that you're among the power elite.

12. What do you have against Krugman?
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 11:55 AM by pscot
He's a progressive economist who has been consistently on our side. I can post a picture of J.K.Galbraith with royalty. It wouldn't tell you a damn thing about his liberal bona fides. If you have a point, makeit. Otherwise your comment is just a smear.

13. if your economics is political
then your economics is simply wrong. Economics is a mathematical discipline and math cannot be political. "Political economics" is politics, and not economics at all.

What's my problem with Krugman? He lies with the dogs, and I don't like fleas. He tells you what you want to hear while getting you to back the very kinds of policies that help his rich friends grow richer off your labor.

He runs with the rich and the powerful. They are his friends, not "you and me". His situation is nothing like the situation of the average person he falsely insinuates here that he is. It's probably been two decades (and I'm being generous) since the last time Krugman socialized with normal average people.

14. Youre right. Policies don't affect the pure math of economics.
Edited on Tue Mar-15-11 02:27 PM by GillesDeleuze
If you are some sort of classical theorist.

But people like Krugman deal with the economic effects of specific policies and budgets. If you think that's "political" stay in your mathematically pure discipline.

8. They don't have to be rich.
They just have to form cabals and take over community leader positions. It's called the good ole boy network.

10. There are the rich and there are the enablers they hire
The rest of us are not even valuable commodities to them.
