US healthcare is billion-dollar biz for Indian IT
23 Mar, 2011, 03.28AM IST, N Shivapriya,ET Bureau

MUMBAI: The US healthcare sector offers a multi-billion dollar IT and back-office services opportunity, much bigger than the Y2K opportunity which transformed many Indian IT providers.

Recent regulatory changes mandating more inclusive healthcare and standardisation in patient records in the US have made the opportunity more attractive and immediate.

Richard S Garnick , who in his previous avatar as Wipro's head of the Americas and enterprise application services helped to grow revenues from millions to billions, now wants to repeat that growth story in the healthcare sector.

"When I joined Wipro in 2001, North America was only $140 million in revenues. When I left in 2005 it was $2 billion," says Garnick. He started ConJoin over three years ago to help transform companies using the globalisation model.

5. Obama calls for health records to be streamlined and jobs go to
India?

I looked at an article from 2009 (link below) and it says the US "suffers a dearth of skilled workers necessary to build and implement the necessary technology".

Finding it difficult to believe that we have a shortage of IT people or those who could be trained.
