As is well known Libya has extensive oil reserves of excellent quality. Many countries in Europe use Libyan oil especially Italy but many others and also China as well. After relations with Libya improved with Gadaffi turning over suspects in the Lockerbie case, destroying his own WMDs, and breaking off with the radical terrorist groups he funded and supported, many western oil companies made deals with the Libyan government to develop the oil fields. One might think that oil would not be a reason to want regime change because the big oil companies were already doing well under arrangements with Libya. But this ignores two key factors in the situation.
First from the seventies on Gadaffi has pursued a process of partial nationalization of foreign oil companies. The National Oil Company dominates the oil patch:

"The National Oil Corporation (NOC) is the national oil company of Libya. It dominates Libya's oil industry, along with a number of smaller subsidiaries, which combined account for around half of the country's oil output "
