Miller needs to opt for an honorable exit out of the Democratic Party
http://onlineathens.com/stories/063004/opi_20040630021.shtml

Why doesn't Zell Miller match Reagan's and Perdue's partisan histories? Why can't our senior senator simply announce he no longer considers himself a Democrat?

(snip)

If Miller truly believes the Democratic Party has become ''value-neutral,'' why doesn't he jump to the GOP, where self-professed morality is a perennial platform theme?

Changing parties in Georgia is not a big deal. We have no party registration for voters. You can switch by simply putting your ballot where your mouth is. Miller should consider trying it. Of course, such a switch might upset the marketing plan for his book and lectures. The reality-TV generation is not much interested in dull personalities who match beliefs with party affiliation - just ask John McCain. Listening to a colorful renegade with a Dixie drawl is much more amusing.

1. honorable?
He should be raked over the coals, and vilified when he leaves. At least the GOP will know what they are getting when they come out of the closet and offer him a position in the Grand Old (Puke) Party.

I call that full discloser. ;-)

2. "Honor" is a flexible term, especially for Republicans.
I think Bill Shipp meant "honorable" as compared to the passive-aggressive way Zell's going about it now.

3. I think honorable maybe in the Japanese sense
Zell, you have gravely dishonored yourself. Now please disembowel yourself to reclaim your honor. Don't know how? Here are some simple instructions:

<http://kyushu.com/gleaner/editorspick/seppuku.shtml>

/snip
"There are three ritual systems indicating when it is appropriate to strike; choose the one most appropriate to you. Do chat to your kaishaku-nin beforehand and establish precisely when he is to intervene. DON'T rely on a student, in our experience they make lousy kaishikunin - theyíve all seen far too many samurai movies and read too few history books. They will almost certainly insist you not only disembowel yourself but write your name in kanji with your own blood on a silken handkerchief given-you-by-fair-virgin-lady ("and no, katakana won't do") before carrying out their ultimate duty. If you are a child, point out that it is customary to strike at the earliest possible moment. The knife itself, the kozuka, should be of about 11.5 inches, wrapped in paper with the final inch exposed. Check it is steel and not a painted bamboo substitute. Youth can be cruel."
