Bush campaign courts the religious right

THE GUARDIAN , Fort Lauderdale, Florida

No matter what happens in Iraq, and no matter what the US economy does between now and the presidential election, Randy Bernsen will be voting for President George W. Bush. It will be an act of faith.

Religious faith will be at the heart of the presidential election in November. About a quarter of the electorate are white evangelical Protestants, like Bernsen. They represent the most powerful single bloc in US politics, one that is more engaged in the battle this year than at any time since the moral majority brought out the vote for the late president Ronald Reagan.

In fact, the sense of loyalty is even deeper now. Reagan was seen as an ally. In Bush, the evangelicals recognize one of their own. He talks their language. Their defining belief in salvation and redemption is personified in his decision to turn away from alcohol, nearly 20 years ago, and be "born again" in the faith.

Bernsen and his kind are the most dangerous people on Earth because they don't use their brains. Do you think God respects a person who seeks knowledge, judges facts objectively, listens to all points of views... or a person who blindly follows another person. Especially when there is enough evidence which points to the man may well be the Son of Satan.

1. I've read that extreme religious fanaticism
and evangelism is actually a known psychological trait. It has to do with mental disorders. Whatever your disorder, there's a church out there that will fill it. It's on a sliding scale: the more dysfunctional you are, the more radical the church you will belong to.

I have read that there are millions of people who should really be in support groups like AA or Al-Anon, but instead have gone to organized religion. As a result, they don't get the help they need, but instead have substituted one addiction for another.

Right, George?
