The Most Liberal Ticket, Ever

Thursday, July 08, 2004

By Bill O'Reilly

Hi, I'm Bill O'Reilly.  Thank you for watching us tonight.

The Kerry-Edwards ticket is the most liberal ever.  That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo."  According to the liberal lobbying group, Americans for Democratic Action (search), John Kerry has a lifetime liberal rating of 92 percent and John Edwards stands at 81 percent.  These ratings are based upon their voting records in the Senate.

By contrast, Al Gore's liberal rating was just 65 percent.  Thus, the Kerry-Edwards ticket becomes the most liberal in American history, passing Mondale-Ferraro (search) in 1984.

The Gallup (search) poll people recently studied ideology in the USA and found out that only 19 percent of Americans consider themselves liberal.  By contrast, 41 percent say they're conservative. Thus, the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign seems to be at a disadvantage.  But maybe not.

4. O'Reilly is an ignorant goon...

I am thoroughly fed up with this "most...ever" crap when supposedly authoritative opinions are being given by supposedly educated individuals. It's one thing to engage in a bit of casual hyperbole, but this stuff is just nonsense. O'Reilly, and most of his ilk, can't coherently think of anything prior to about 1980.

Even using "liberal" in its modern sense, I think it would be hard to find a more liberal ticket in the last century than FDR/Wallace in 1941. In fact Wallace was dropped from the ticket due to the demands of party leaders due to what the called his "ultra liberal" views. I doubt very seriously anything Kerry/Edwards would implement would meet the breadth of progressive reforms instituted during FDR's administration, particularly those advanced by Wallace as Secretary of Agriculture during FDR's first two terms and as Secretary of Commerce during the last.

Furthermore, I am also fed up with "liberal" being considered a bad thing, but I may as well complain to the brick walls on that.

5. Most Conservative Ticket, Ever
According to the Conservative lobbying group, Lee's Army of Virginia, Bush
has a lifetime conservative rating of 107 and Cheney's is off the chart completely.
Their ratings are based on 4 straight years of pushing nearly 300 million people
back to 1860.

By contrast George H.W. Bush's conservative rating was just 94. Thus, Bush-
Cheney becomes the most conservative in American History, passing Davis-
Stephens in 1862.

The Gallup poll people recently studied ideology in the USA and found out
that only 8 percent of Americans are as knuckle-draggingly conservative
as Bush-Cheney, but thru propaganda and terror fear, many American morAns
CONSIDER themselves conservative despite being favorable to Social Security,
clean environments, public education, Hollywood movies and the empathic
liberal carpenter of Nazareth.

Thus, the Bush-Cheney presidential campaign seems to be at a disadvantage.
But maybe not (since they have installed touch-screen, no recount voting,
purged eligible minority voters, yell 'terra attack' every 5 minutes, outspend
Democrats by $100 million, own most media outlets, and will declare martial
law if it looks like they are losing the election).

6. What's wrong with being liberal anyway?
The UK has a Liberal Democrat party, and many other countries have Liberal parties. Why do some people see it as a dirty word?

Joe McCarthy

His 1950's witch hunt against "leftists" cemented the image of anyone even to the left of center as an evil, "godless Commie."

The image persists to this day one form or another.

And welcome to DU!!! :hi:

10. how to counter this
as I saw posted elsewhere on DU, we can counter this with labeling the Bush/Cheney admiinistration as "the most conservative administration ever" or the "most radical adminstration ever".
